Close, but not close enough.

Are you still doing the Spa trip on that weekend Peter?

Re: Nurburgring 30th Setember - 1st October

I very much doubt it at this stage. I've had to switch my plans around quite a bit lately, and i will be ending a 9 day Road Trip on Sept. 23rd, which involves ca. 4.000 km of driving. I can imagine i would be wanting to minimize any extra curricular driving for a good while after that!

Hi Vamos,

No other plans that weekend, so a visit to the ring is likely.

I'll keep you posted and we will see if we can arrange a meet and some pax laps.

Hi Vamos.

Great. The "Northloop" stickers I requested should be waiting in my mailbox when I get home from holiday (today).

I'm leaving in about one hour. Nice drive of apx. 1000 kilometers in the GTA from the South of France. Looking forward to it.

Nice chance to meet you, Gary, Dave and the other Northloopers again.

I'll be there for sure !!!!

Hi,

I'm going to be there that weekend. I'll be there from Friday 29th in my GTV and plan to be there until the following Friday. Another friend will be there in his 145QV.

I look forward to meeting some other Alfa enthusiasts while I'm there.

Cheers,
Joel.

NO!! Took it for one trackday at Zolder and I wasn't having fun in it.
It performed well enough, even the brakes are better then in the GTA. But it just doesn't give me the fun factor that an Alfa V6 gives me. The couple of laps I did with the GTA that afternoon gave me more plessure.

The bimmer is looking for a new owner.

So I will be there in the GTA probably. Or if I manage to find a bargain Alfa 75 of Alfa 155 V6 before, perhaps I'll bring that. But only if it's safe enough.

My plan is to find something this fall, work on it in the winter and start using it on track next year.

So for this moment it's the GTA for Zandvoort (Spettacolo) and the ring.

Will you be in the 156 of the scoob?

Hi Classic,

Have you gotten used to your paint brushes already?

I know, I'm there often. It's going to be an Alfa V6 for sure. Just not sure if it's going to be a 75, 155 or 164.

Don't really care about WB or not. Just need an Alfa V6.

Maybe you should talk to Alfa Experience about taking a lap or two in one of their cars, that would give you a better idea whether to go the RWD or FWD route, and also what is achievable with a track prepped 75. Quite a difference between a 75 and 155. 164 I think too chunky for this, remember "weight is the enemy"!

Also consider a 33? Remember Edwards car, that was a rocket, and the 1.7 boxer has a great sound too.

Paint brushes ? Unfortunalty not. I'll get the key of my new home about 2 weeks.

But what Vamos says, the 164 isn't an option for the track.

It's difficult to find a 75v6 without rust. If you find one they're very expensive (for a car of '90). I would choose the 155v6.

I think the weight difference between the 75 / 155 en 164 is less then you expect. (source: Autoweek.nl)

155 2.5 V6 pre 1995 = 1350 kg.
75 3.0 V6 post 1990 = 1300 kg.
164 3.0 V6 pre 1993 = 1335 kg.
164 3.0 V6 post 1993 = 1385 kg.
164 3.0 V6 24V = 1434 kg.

So at most we're talking about 134 kg. difference. I think that's something I could live with. And the 164 with 3.0 liters have got way more torque. Modified 155 with 3.0 V6 12V / 24V is also an option.

I'm not looking for the meanest trackday car in the world.

I wan't things in this order:
- something that is fun to drive and sounds right. Alfa V6!!
- something that is safe to drive even in the usually moist conditions at the ring (FWD or 4WD would be first on my list)
- something not so light so it can protect me a bit in case of an accident.
- something not so common. GTA's are rare at the ring and on trackdays I visit. 75's are obviously common on the ring (thanks Ron). 155 and 164 are also rare sightings.
- relatively cheap

Lap times and top speed are not really that important. Just fun, safe, affordable and Alfa V6. I prefer to have the V6 sound (even 2.0 V6 Turbo would be fine, lots of torque ) but less reliable so more expensive.

True, Edward's 33 was awesome but just not for me.

Re: Nurburgring 30th Setember - 1st October

I understand your priorities. Given that, I would go for a 155 V6, just because they look so mean. Red with black wheels, stripped and caged... there are not that many cars that look so purposeful.

Andy H, who is a member on here, and who we met at the Ring has one like that. Beautiful.

TBH, I think you know what you want and when you see the right car, you will recognize it. It always makes sense to buy a car that somebody else has done all the expensive work to already, but its a function of price too. Maybe you will even find a caged 156 for not all that much money. Have fun searching.

Re: Nurburgring 30th Setember - 1st October

@Vamos: It was VERY nice to meet you again. Too bad sunday was so busy. Lines of cars on Dottinger Hohe, you can't imagine. Even I didn't experience these conditions before.

Glad we did manage a tandem lap. Great scoop you have there !!!!

----

Short trip report.

Drove to the Nurburgring on sundaymorning. Arrived around 10 during a closure. Had some SMS contact with Vamos on the way, he told me no need to hurry.

Did some laps sundaymorning. Got irritated because of the number of cars, number of inexperienced drivers so decided to go for some ringside photo session. Sundayafternoon it started to rain. Did some great laps untill closing time in mild rain. The lines of cars dissapeared and it was GREAT !!!!

Monday was moist again, but it didn't rain anymore. Did some laps but the day was ruined by a mayor accident in the afternoon. Saw something I never want to see again and the ring never opened after that.

Tuesday was rainy again. I had great fun doing a timed lap with a friend (Jorrit) in his Golf TDI (his ringtool BMW 325i had a fuelpump problem). We did a first TOURIST lap (with a stop at Breidscheid to see if a dutch biker/marshall was awake, he wasn't, and only 120 km/h up Kesselchen) and wondered if this was below 15 minutes. So we did a second timed lap. Again with a stop at Breidscheid (Michiel was awake and we exchanged some words, got to 128 km/h before the speedo started dropping), but with 10 minutes on the Nokia stopwatch we had to stop for some yellow flag action when a British porsche crashed between Brunchen and Pflanzgarten spilling a lot of oil on track. I was waving a yellow flag for some 20 minutes in mild rain. So we never finished this high-speed timed lap.

Then we did two laps in the GTA without helmets, we thought it wouldn't go that fast in de rain. But during the second lap we both agreed this was nearing "Helmet" speeds so we stopped after that.

After that I did a couple of solo wet laps (with helmet) in the GTA and was having so much fun. Pretty quiet and moist (not wet) conditions. Then a photo shoot at Wipperman / Eschbach (with a nice Porsche 911 Turbo spin) and one last lap in dry conditions, before heading home.

Great 3 days at the ring. Even in the rain, the GTA is just so much fun.

I'll be there 21 & 22nd of October. And maybe even sooner.

Pics are on www.147gta.nl

Re: Nurburgring 30th Setember - 1st October

I am having a hairy assed week, so no time to put report together, but likewise it was great to meet, and see the GTA performing well and being so well driven too.

Sunday was very busy, and at times it was just a joke on track. Lots of people with no mirrors. Nasty bike/M3 accident on Dotinger Hohe -absolutely stupid place to have an accident.

Great tandem "slow" lap in the wet Will write more when things slow down a little.
