Re: Nurburgring 30th June - 4th July

Had a great Ring trip today. Great weather, no mayor accidents, relatively quiet.

Met with some dutch ringers (couple of Alfa Spider 2.0TS drivers, gave them a pax lap in the GTA) and even did a pax-lap myself, in a stripped BMW
525i. Driver had lots of experience on the Ring so great learning.
The lap before we did a tandem lap so I followed him around. I was lifting on every little straight to stay behind. Only from Hohe Acht I lost his tail. His 1990 BMW is great to ride the curbs at the twisty sections. I keep my 2003 GTA of the curbs if possible so he pulled away slightly.

Only had the video running on the last two solo laps of the day.

First lap is pretty quiet except for the ambulance? at the start.

Second lap I had some fun with a german biker, was on his tale from Breidscheid till the end. I gave him a "tumbs up" as I passed him on the home straight. He gave me the finger as he passed me again in the pits.

Guess he didn't like that GTA sticking in his mirrors.

It's big (125MB), 22 minutes of WMV video.

Great fun.

@Jochen, didn't spot you today. Were you there?

Hi Gary,

Ofcourse it was a video from a couple years ago.
But nice to watch anyway.

Next saturday is fully booked with a late dinner in the evening, far from home, so I'll be in bed late. Perhaps, if I can make an early wake-up, I'll head for the Ring. If the weather and crowd is anything like yesterday, it will be great again.

This wednesday an afternoon at Zolder is planned. Hope to keep the GTA safe.

Cheers.

Very nice
I know yhat it's not necessarelly a high speed circuit, but out of curiosity, what was the maximum speed reached?

Re: Nurburgring 30th June - 4th July

Actually its a really high speed circuit, you would be braking from over 140mph++ for a number of corners - some of them very tricky.

Some of the corners are taken at 120mph++..

You could reach whatever speed you want on the back straight towords the barriers, but the lap is considered over after passing under the Gantry.

As well as the actual speeds being very very high, the impression in the car apprears hugely faster than video can show, since there is this awesome peripheral vision effect - the track is very narrow and lined with Armco and trees.
So effectively everything to either side is a blur of speed!

I'm not a doctor - but I really do recommend braking later

Thanks.

I think the fastest sections are:
-downhill between "flugplatz" and "schwedenkreuz"
-downhill through fuchsrohre

At both sections the speedo reeds somewhere around 210-220 km/h.

But really, you don't want to be watching the speedo at that speed through those sections.

Kesselchen is longer but to steep. Even my GTA struggles to reach 200 before "mutkurve".

Yesterday I never took the home straight at full speed untill the end. Was trying to cool everything before entering the parking area. I guess you could reach speeds of around 220 if your exit from galgenkopf is perfect.

And keep in mind, the speedo is at least 10% off at those speeds?

@TB: you reached 240 I think? On my pax-lap with you last april.

But speed isn't the best thing about a lap on the ring. It's the amazing height difference and challange of learning this long track and getting (most) corners right. But it takes time, and I'm still as green as grass.

Great fun !!!

Hey Robert, adding notches to the GTA revolver agin I see

I should be taking receipt of the Scooby next week, so once run in, I will try to fit in a trip before the summer is out. Be great if we could coordinate to see which is a better ring tool.

Hey there Vamos,

Yep, she's getting used to the recent, rather frequent, abuse at the ring.

Wow, a Scooby. I'm afraid the GTA will be no match in and exiting the corners. 4WD will take care of that.

Would be great to meet again and do some tandem (and pax) laps. Would love to experience a lap in the scoobster.

Re: Nurburgring 30th June - 4th July

It's the wagon, non-STI too, so it should be similar in performance to the GTA.

I do have to be honest that I have great expectations from the handling though, very, very curious how it transfers to the Ring.

Brakes will probably be a weak point - sounds like a modding plan.

Does the missus agree with the modding plans??

Re: Nurburgring 30th June - 4th July

I think the pax lap I gave you was only my 8th lap or so (most of the previous ones being slippy ones) - so I was easing up too much at Kesselchen, but in later laps the car was still accelerating very gamely in 5th gear there.
Somebody who knew what they were doing in my car could hit 140mph on that section I'm sure

For the approach to Schwedenkreuz I remember being well into 5th gear and for my later laps I would guess that would translate to about 140mph too - and thats allowing a big safety margin under braking.

I'm can't remember exactly the speed in fochsrohe (wasn't looking at speedo!) but I certainly was in 5th for a good few seconds steeply downhill so it was fast - certainly over 130mph.
Change up to 5th gear is at 120mph I think, and acceleration is very strong down the 11% decline in the max powerzone.

More is possible for the brave for sure, I always had allowed very conservative braking distances which were also helped by the big uphill before adenaur forst.

As it turned out I was right to be conservative my new but bedded-in brake pads were totally worn after 15 laps..

Am pretty sure I got > 250kph from Galgenkopf, wasn't trying to max it just do a high speed brake test.
No skill was required for that

To be honest I was actually being quite conservative since it was my first real session with the car since it had a lot of work done on it. I hadn't an opportunity to experiment with settings for the brand new dampers for dry track use beforehand - so it was a case of feeling my way around both the car and the track.
Snow, hailstone, rain, and Sun just added to the mix!

I didn't think the Ring was the best place to find out for the first time how well the car got out of shape - and drove accordingly.
I'm now running with 120% stiffer dampers at the rear than I used there which livens things up considerably!

Cheers,
TB

Well it's a company car, so the question lies more in the direction of my accountant

I am working on it.

Sorry Gary, I was hoping to be in bed at a resonable time, but after just two hours of sleep the Ring was the last thing on my mind. The "other" commitments spoiled the fun and I would have wrecked the GTA for sure.

Next time?

Coming sunday. I hope to get rid of my family (BBQ party saturday at my house) at a resonable time, get some sleep and be at the ring around 8.

It gets more expensive when its only closed for 15 mins but they charge you for 30

It has made me see the guys in the office in a different light.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that Gary. Four figures for a half an hour that is quite a fee. Also seems to particularly unfairly applied in your case.

Still, it sounds like you guys made quite a weekend of it
