Right then time to make this official Who's up for an epic run.

7th - 14th October 2009

The run starts on the 7th October from England and goes on til the 14th October, taking in some of the finest roads that France and Spain have to offer.

The route some takes in some of the top gear best driving roads including the Gorge Du Tarn and Gorges D'Ardeche roads, the Route Napoleon and also includes going over and under the Millau Viaduct for an ideal photo opportunity, as well as a drive to the top of Mont Ventoux (all 6000 feet of it ),

It also includes a trip to the Reims motor racing circuit remains as well as some other goodies that we've worked out along the way including various places of interest. Oh and a little run up to Andorra for a bit of duty free on the way back from spain.

The cost of the run will be £100 per car for the eurotunnel crossing and then approximately £35 per night per room for hotels so around £345 based on a car and 1 driver (although this can be reduced if you share a room with someone else as the hotels will be room rate rather than Per Person) - Booking Details to follow shortly!

We will also be providing Maps / Sat Nav Files for all of the routes on the trip so you don't have to worry about getting lost.

Hi John,

The more the merrier.. if you want to join the run down to Millau that's great

We'll be doing the Gorge Du Tarn roads on the way there, which will be day two of the run ending in Millau that afternoon / evening.

Likewise if anyone else fancies doing the first few days but not the whole trip, that's possbile, we're going to provide a list of the hotels that we're getting deals from and then people can decide what they want to book to simplify things.

Well RomeoRaider did most of the route planning - I just kept finding little diversions for him whenever I heard of a good road - he must have redone the route about 5 times now but all for a good cause.

In that case, muchos respect to both of you.

I had enough trouble organising a 30 minute run around Hertfordshire.

Why, thank you sir! .

I'm just adding the final 'fine-detail' stuff (lunch stops etc) to the routes then we'll be getting them posted up here for you all to inspect. After all that 'virtual journey' stuff I'll be going for a long 'lie-down' (probably about a month, ) in a darkened space until it's time to do it for real, .

Nice!

I think a month in a panic room is well deserved.

Well, here goes folks - the first instalment, as promised by JSM, to whet your appetites.

DAY 1 Wednesday 7th October.

Depart the Eurotunnel terminal on to the old coastal road at Bleriot Plage (from where Louis Bleriot started his cross-channel flight 100 years ago) and follow this route down to Boulogne Boulogne-sur-Mer / Town Guide where we park up for the morning (point B on the map is a good-sized car park that doesn't get too busy). After a wander down the Grand Rue and breakfast from one of the many patisseries there, it's into Place Dalton for a browse around the lively street market before moving back up the hill into the walled old town with its ramparts, fort and cathedral. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ueBoulogne.jpg

Late morning, depart Boulogne and on to the motorway towards Abbeville then east towards Rouen so as to avoid driving anywhere near to Paris. Proposed lunch stop is here Les relais routiers (the calf's head is not compulsory ) at point C on the map.

From here, it's on to Rouen then turning southwards and off the motorway for a bit of cross-country travel before rejoining the motorway again north of Orleans for the final run down to our overnight stop in Bourges (most likely the Hotel Premiere Classe). In the town centre, there is a wide range of restaurants to cater for all ethnic preferences. Restaurant BOURGES : le guide restaurant, la slection des meilleurs restaurants BOURGES.

Route for Day 1 : http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,10.799561&z=7

Road Tolls for the day - 22.50€

DAY 2 Thursday 8th October.

Into Bourges town centre Bourges France - Loire Valley - IndigoGuide Bourges and park up close to the 13th century cathedral for a visit here Bourges Cathedral and/or the old medieval quarter Bourges - The half-timbered houses of Bourges.

After a couple of hours soaking up the culture and architecture, we take the motorway south almost to Clermont-Ferrand before turning off for the proposed lunch stop here (point C on the map) Les relais routiers within sight of the numerous extinct volcanoes.

After lunch, if the weather is suitable and time permits then we may drive to the top of one of them (Puy-de-Dome) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...-de-dome-1.jpg before it's briefly back on to the motorway to the start of a little 'diversion' courtesy of JSM, through the Gorges du Tarn Gorges du Tarn France travel information, places to visit, gites and Gorges du Tarn hotels to reach our overnight stop in Millau (edit : hotel now decided) Millau France travel information, places to visit, gites and Millau hotels. Again, Millau has a wide choice of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets : http://www.linternaute.com/restauran...p/millau.shtml

Route for Day 2: (without Puy-de-Dome) http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,10.799561&z=7

or with the volcano: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,10.799561&z=7

Road Tolls for the day - 13.70€ (or 19.70€ if we include the Puy-de-Dome)

(Once the hotel is chosen, I'll update these maps) - edit : maps now updated with hotel location

I'll give you a little while to digest that lot before I hit you with the next couple of days' worth, .

If you've survived ploughing through that last lot - well done........ so here's the next bit to add to the pile.

DAY 3 Friday 9th October

Departing Millau, we backtrack slightly to join the southbound motorway for the viaduct crossing http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...lauviaduct.jpg before exiting and looping around underneath to gain another perspective on this marvel of British design. Highest, longest : the Viaduct de Millau | France

Leaving behind this 'made-by-man' wonder, we head up a nice 'twisty' into the Cevennes National Park (Click on the 'En Images' tab here for 6 minute slide-show of the whole region : http://www.cevennes-parcnational.fr/) to this 'made-by-nature' one : Abime de Bramabiau - Site Officiel - rivière souterraine du massif central, proche du Mont-Aigoual et du Viaduc de Millau, des gorges du Tarn et de la Jonte From here, it's a further test of steering, brakes and suspension as we make the long descent to the Mediterranean at Montpellier (via the local Alfa dealer - point C on the map) before a quick 'squirt' along the motorway to our proposed lunch stop (point D on the map) here : Les relais routiers

After being fed and watered, it's back on to the motorway as far as Perpignon where we head to the coast and cross into Spain on another 'interesting' stretch of tarmac that we can again blame thank JSM for. Then it's back on the motorway towards Barcelona before turning inland again into the foothills of the Pyrenees and our evening meal and overnight stop here : Restaurant Ramon Park Hotel / http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...Park-Hotel.jpg It is a bit more expensive than our other nights (I've negotiated a discount which brings it down to about £45 per head based on 2 sharing) but it is a 4-star joint............ And compared to what we'd have to pay in Barcelona (not to mention the nightmare of finding secure parking), it's a positive bargain.

Route for Day 3 : http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,10.799561&z=7
Road Tolls for the day (including the 'big bridge') - 23.00€ (approximately, as the Spanish tolls seem to change on an almost minute by minute basis, )

Day 4 follows shortly - watch this space!

Just had some fantastic news

I was going to be asking you guys for a lift as my cars going back on the 1st October and I was originally going to be given a hire car by my new employers which I couldn't take abroad.

However They've heard about my predicament and they've very kindly managed to sort me out with one of their pool cars (will be a vectra or something so will need some stick on alfa badges) which means that I can take it abroad

WOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

What, what, what??? No Alfa?

Oh Jon!

Have you asked the lease company direct? They might just let you just pay for an extra couple of weeks on the lease before it hits the auction. Chances are it will have to go on sale on the prestige day which could be a month away. No point in the car sitting around for a few weeks when they could lease it for some cash.
Worth a punt my good man, everybody has a price.

Problem is it's leased under a specific agreement with Siemens who provide a deposit towards the car which is leased by Lex, I've tried to take on the lease myself but it's not possible

So it's a shame but until three hours ago I didn't have anything to drive on the run so I'm over the moon at the moment.

Now in process of selecting the next company vehicle, unfortunately they don't do Alfa's

So may be going outside of the Company Scheme.

Seimens to Lex, to you, to them, to me, to you. Sounds like a Chuckle brother scenario.

Thats one headache after another. Glad you got a car sorted though. Thats quite a result in the circumstances.

I was looking at Alfa's for my brother the other day, for his company car scheme. £269 +VAT on a 159Ti.
I'm tempted myself.

Here you go, https://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/rant-...ir-cars-4.html , (post #89) .

Seriously though, that's great news that you're going to have wheels. All the while that I've been preparing the itinerary, I couldn't help thinking what a shame it was that the guy who started-off the whole idea was going to be stuck as a passenger.

Just got to get busy now changing all the routes to a 'Vectra-friendly' format - can you choose a 'Motorways Only' option in GoogleMaps? . Only kidding.

Thanks RR ,

The anticipation has built even more now I know I can drive it myself.. gutted it isn't in an alfa.. but to drive these roads will be fantastic in any car.. I will stick an alfa badge on the steering wheel for effect. Next year I will do it proper in the GTV V6 I'm sorting out at the moment

After a short intermission to catch your breath, here's the first part of the 'return' leg.

DAY 4 Saturday 10th October

Depart Santpedor and climb into the Pyrenees to Andorra (typical scenery : http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...p/Andorra2.jpg , http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ip/Andorra.jpg) for some duty-free purchases, should you feel that way inclined, . Just remember to stick within the allowances as I know from personal experience that the customs officers on the French border don't really need an excuse to be proper 'bar-stewards' so let's not give them one, . http://www.frenchentree.com/languedo...e.asp?id=18519.

After crossing back into France, (either on the 'new' road through the tunnel - 4.2km long (YouTube - Tunnel between Andorra and France) or on the 'old' road over the pass of Port d'Envalira - 2,400m high (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...iraAndorra.jpg , YouTube - Andorra - France on my Honda 600 CBF N motorbike) we descend to Ax-les-Thermes for lunch (point C on the map). As a ski-resort, there is a wide selection of suitable 'eateries' : http://www.cuisine-francaise.com/res...rmes-14211.htm.

From here it's on to Carcassonne Carcassonne Town Village visit - by Provence Beyond to spend the rest of the day exploring some of the medieval walled city, http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...arcassonne.jpg. We can either stay here for our evening meal (Liste des restaurants de Carcassonne) or head-off on the short cross-country sprint to our overnight stop in Beziers (again, most likely the Hotel Premiere Classe) before seeking out sustenance (Liste des restaurants de Beziers).

And compared to what we'd have to pay in Barcelona (not to mention the nightmare of finding secure parking), it's a positive bargain. ..........
I've been in contact with them again to quote me for dinner, bed and breakfast as a package and have got them down to just over £60 per head (dinner is usually £25 - £30 on it's own here). I'm well-pleased with that and I'm looking forward to this one night of 'luxury' to break up our somewhat hectic schedule, .
