insuring myself on a friend's car

i'm planning on doing a car swap with a mate in the summer, so i can take his big estate car on holiday across europe, and he can use my 159 in the uk whilst i'm away

does anybody know if i'd be able to take out my own temporary cover on his car through one of the myriad companies out here on the internet? or could this only be done through his insurance company?

cheers
al

It is usual to add a driver to each policy and not expensive. The downside is of course that in the event of a claim it is the car owners premium that is affected. I remember well my brother severely damaging my father's car in such a swap and the arguments that followed.

I think you can only have one insurance policy active per vehicle, I don't think you and your mate can have a policy each on it.

I've been wrong before mind you

spoke to my insurers and they've quoted nearly £100 just to have my mate added as a named driver on mine. would've been half that to add him temporarily but max for that is 2 weeks, we're away for 17 nights.

he's getting a quote from his insurers tomorrow. gonna be expensive i'd imagine - audi a6 avant across 8 countries, 2 of them non-EU. then we'd have to get special permission no doubt from the leasing company... it's beginning to look like the 159 might be getting another roadtrip under its belt

indeed. i'm quite pleased actually - yeah the a6 would be a whole lot more practical etc etc but it's no 159 in the looks department, and it wouldn't feel quite right driving a borrowed german car through italy whilst my italian beauty got left at home. and i'd need to buy set of roof bars for the a6, whereas i've already got some for the 159

there, i've convinced myself - the alfa rides again
