Breakdown Cover ..

Who do you use? Would you recommend them?

So we've been with the AA for eons .. and every year the cost goes up ..

But recently when my son's 14-year-old Clio gave up the ghost, the AA sent out a local breakdown and they were less than helpful .. as it was a diesel, the contents of the gearbox was spread over a wide area of the Peak District (and there was a large oil puddle) and it was Bank Holiday Monday we cut our losses and scrapped it!! (Sun roof leaked, a/c didn't work, bodywork scratched and battered .. and it wasn't environmentally friendly .. [his words, not mine!])

So do I try and negotiate a better rate with AA or move to another .. RAC, GreenFlag, other?

Green Flag. Usually gives a cheaper quote than RAC or AA. It's a long time since I've claimed on it, but when I did they always gave good service. When I had my dear old 156, I used to travel around by Green Flag. The car looked beautiful up on the flatbeds.

The AA and RAC were taken over by Venture capitalists years ago but my brother, who runs a Morris Traveller found he’d recommend the same company as Sterzo. He’s now got a modernised Traveller which is reliable after a few call outs.

Which reminds me I never asked him how much his “modern” Minor cost and now I looked on the website where he got it https://www.morrisminor.org.uk/car-for-sale/215-1969-almond-green-traveller

Martin Lewis (MoneySavingExpert founder) famously said that "Loyalty is for dogs" - and he's right. Loyal customers almost always get the worst deals.

I have no loyalty to any of these breakdown firms and I change provider every year to get a good price/cashback/introductory discounts etc...

AutoAid. Recommended by MoneySaving Expert as the cheapest well reviewed cover supplier. And they recovered my from the top of an Alp and paid for a nights stay in a hotel with not so much as a grumble or complication.

I used Breakdown assist as it was the cheapest I could find that included onward travel.

I have been paying for cover since 2008, and only needed it once when I was a passenger in my Fathers Mercedes CLS which died around 50 miles from home.

As I am a very infrequent user I will stick to the cheaper ones. I was in the RAC at the time of the Merc breakdown.

I've been with Green Flag for the last couple of years - the cheapest 'known' company I could find. The price seemed very cheap, but I've not had the need to call them out yet so no idea what the service is like.
For years I never bothered with any breakdown cover, it's only because I'm now driving quite an old car with a dodgy gearbox so I needed peace of mind for the odd long trip I do.

I have been using GEM for a few years now. I had to call them once when I had a small issue on the 147. Both my wife and I are covered in any car we drive. I cant remember how much but its not expensive.
