New family car

The wife is due an upgrade soon...Oct I think. Currently driving a Volvo V40 d2 Automatic.
Its been a good enough wee car over the last 3 years but if were both honest, its maybe not been quite big enough.
Does anyone want to pitch in with ideas, experienced or otherwise?
We've both actually considered a VW transporter 1.9tdi but that may be just a tad oversized. It's the vans we have at my work and I drive them all the time. Find them perfectly acceptable and even the basic spec has some goodies.

Our needs are that it needs to be relatively economical. Have room for 2+2 and a dog
Be able to take a weeks worth of camping gear without having to play tetris when loading it.

All ideas welcomed.....

My other half has a Volvo XC40 (albeit a petrol one) and it's a great small SUV. I tried to persuade her into a Steve but she was having none of it - too big apparently. Dynamically the Volvo's a big vague, but otherwise no real complaints. Well, maybe it's a bit bossy with all its safety-oriented driver aids, but that's true of most modern cars.
