How do you destroy a gearbox

My mum bless her is 78 and is not a bad driver, she does like to ride the clutch a bit, anyway she broke down last week, and I thought she had just burnt out another clutch on her 09 Panda, the feedback from the garage is the gearbox is fubar, what do you make of the photos, do you think she put it in the wrong gear, she's not really sure how it happened, Any thoughts folks

Looks like the clutch has let go in spectacular fashion.

Its the sort of thing that you would expect on a boy racers car, where the car is reversed, put in 1st and the clutch dumped quickly to spin the wheels.

I am sure that isn't what she has done though.

But she might have done what you do see a lot of people doing - reversing at modest enough speed, changing to first while it's still rolling backwards and then pulling away quite hard. That could shock it badly enough.

Or could she have clouted a speed bump REALLY hard?

She said the car stopped after overtaking a lorry on a dual carriageway, I'm a bit miffed, but both your suggestions are viable.

I've seen similar to this before. Pressure plate fingers/spring breaks away and chews into the ally housing.

Happened after passing a lorry?

Could she have changed down before passing and then, having passed, gone to change back up; missed the gate and gone down instead? That would certainly have stressed the clutch.

I'm inclined to agree with the garage's conclusion that a new 'box is needed. I'd be interested to see what the clutch looks like.

From the photos there does not appear to be any gearbox damage, only the bell-housing which bolts onto the actual gearbox. If it is just the bell-housing that would be easier and cheaper. Of course a second-hand complete gearbox could work out cheaper if available at a sensible price and has a known provenance.

But then the the gearbox could just be a box of miscellaneous cogs and bearings following that damage.

Well we got a reconditioned box bummer is its an exchange type deal so probably a surcharge as the old one seems caput, its fixed now and an expensive one, but my mum loves getting about and a new car was out of the equation. I've tried to tell her to go easy on revving it before the clutch pedal is up, fingers crossed

Is the damage definitely from the inside? Possible she hit something in the road which has cracked it?

I think so it has holes in more than one section, and my mum didn't say she had hit something, the mechanic seems to think the flywheel may have got damaged or fell apart and caused the damage, not sure to be honest, but she's back on the road so all good.
