Whatever happened to my old Alfa?

Have you ever tried to trace what happened to your old Alfa (other brands available) after you sold it of traded it in?

I did exactly that this morning and the result is surprising and a bit disappointing. I bought my Alfa Mito in 2009, kept it serviced and together until I sold it in 2014. Sold it to a young chap who was going to learn to drive in it, his dad bought it for him. Warned them to check the oil regularly as it's an Alfa and did use a little oil, 'so just keep an eye on the oil level' I said.

Went to Gov.uk to find out it has not had an MOT since 2015! It was not SORNed either. Couldn't find any evidence of it being written off, quite glad about that! Then I paid £1.99 for a basic check and my heart sank as I read it was scrapped in early 2015

My theory is they didn't keep an eye on the oil and let it run dry, the engine went bang and they decided to scrap it.

I sometimes wonder what happened to my first GT, bought new in 2005. I had private plates on it though, and can't remember what the replacement was when I part-exchanged it. I suspect it's gone to the great car park in the sky now. My Alfetta GTV and 33 were both scrapped - something that made sense at the time but I bitterly regret now.

Alfa GT 3.2

If I enter the reg of my old 916 GTV, I get a message saying the number I've entered is incorrect. I'm guessing it's either been scrapped or had a private plate put on it.

My old GTV's on SORN. It's not had a fresh MOT since the last one I had done...which expired in 2012!
It'd done 70-odd thousand miles when I sold it on.
It was in excellent condition, but not exactly a museum piece!

My September 2004 registered 156 2.0 JTS died in February 2013, aged 8.4 years. I suspect somebody got bored with replacing head gaskets, just as I had.

My old corsa which I chopped, in 2014, against the Giulietta QV appeared on autotrader some time later.

It had had a skim and head gasket and I imagine was stripped for parts (heated leather donít you know?) ha! The last MOT (2016) mentioned low coolant.

Let's see.

My S-type is half a mile away in the MoT man who bought it's workshop awaiting body repairs after a minor shunt. My Saab 900 gave its life to save others (mostly its bulletproof Saab not GM engine). That ancient Audi disappeared off the charts after a couple of years. I parted out my Alfa myself.

If anything else is still out there I'll eat my hat.

You are pretty much lethal to anything you buy then.

Just checked my first ever car and it is SORN with a 2017 MoT.

I had a Citroen BX 16 in the late eighties which I sold in about '89 and was still going in the mid nineties but that's been gone a long time now. All the cars I've ever owned except the one I currently own have disappeared! I'm like the Grim Reaper for second hand cars

Apparently my first car is untaxed since 2003 and has no MOT history...

I know where my last Alfa went... on the back of a truck up to Cumbria where it got flooded before it got fixed.

My previous Giulietta is still on the road approaching 100k miles. Has a headlamp reflector failure on the mot in December.

My 33 seems to have gone to alfa heaven

I found an old CRV of mine had failed an Mot because the window tint was too dark and they'd cut the springs! Pimp my Honda, badly!

My BMW R75/5 which I bought in 1974 and p ex'd for my R100s in 1979 is due to be taxed next month, no MoT data so I believe it has been registered as 'historic' so doesn't need one.

My old much loved Vectra, SC53EVM, which we gave to our son over five years ago, he sold it about a year ago seems to be turning into a money pit.

I noticed on the only MOT the new owners of my old Mito did, suddenly they had half a dozen advisories on the MOT. I never had one!

One of my Golfs is missing in action, while the other one has been SORN for yonks; awaiting a sympathetic restoration, I hope. The Alfa was written off in a crash (an absolute crying shame, that), the Polo has been scrapped, but the Clio, the mad 172, is still bombing about with 130k on it; probably coz I ran it in so well 😉

More likely it was Killed in Action. New teenager-drivers are pretty much odds-on to have an accident in their forst year.

Don't say that

Hate to think someone was hurt or worse.

My last Alfa (RE53PVJ) is the only one I've cared enough about to check up on - I even posted on here - I miss that car terribly, it never wanted for anything and was a great little car.

No trace of the registration on gov.uk site, so hoping it's had a new reg number on, rather than been binned/scrapped - seemed to have happened shortly after disappearing from the trader's website.

Still keeping an eye out for it on local breakers/salvage auctions/ebay etc.

An old E30 316i we had, which died after a cambelt snap when down in Devon was left for the local scrap man, was a b it worse for wear generally - surprised to find someone picked it up, and put it back on the road, just passed it's last MOT in March at 168,000mi, no advisories.

Posting from my phone - excuse spelling mistakes

Office Chair.

Most of my many have since gone to the big scrapyard in the sky.
I am in touch through messenger with the chap who bought my first Alfa and as it happens the last (same car) my old Spider. It's on a new engine and when I spoke to him a few weeks back it was almost ready for MOT.

My first Ferrari I was reacquainted with two years ago.

Thanks

Mine too and what's more the only one of three I have owned that I drove before buying.
Most owners are not keen to let other folk drive them.
