Those Volvos are still largely European designs https://www.dezeen.com/2019/05/09/pe...-design-china/
But I wonder where they source the engine mount that broke on topgear against the Velar and Stelvio?

The Mustang, especially since they starting selling it though UK dealers. Didn’t mind them so much before then, when it was a least mildly interesting to see one. You’d have to have absolutely no sense of shame to be seen driving one.

In these times where electric cars are being forced upon us something so unapologetically old-school should be celebrated, but I just can’t stand the things.

Not sure if this counts as irrational but have you seen the new BMW X7? **** me that's a face only a mother could love.

I'd post a pic but some of you might be eating.

That must be why so many cattle grids get stolen. BMW send them off to be chromed then fit them to the latest models.

Generally speaking, I think the manufacturers need to stop trying to out-do each other with ever-brighter LEDs, before we all go completely blind and mad. A car is a great big thing and most people can spot one in daylight, even if it hasn't got blindingly bright lights on.

That said, there is some strong research evidence to show that DRLs reduce the likelihood of accidents - especially collisions involving multiple vehicles.

Having had cars with an wihout DRL's all I can say is that more people seem to pull out in front of me whan I have them turned on.

Either people no longer take any notice of them or they make it harder to judge an aproaching vehicles speed.

Aftermarket ones especially also look terrible.

Good grief. What were the designers of that car taking?

And is there any of it left...?

The DRLs were originally in Scandinavian countries but Berlusconi adopted it because it was an easy and visible signal that he’d arrived as the boss of Italy. It certainly made a good way of anything before it looking old. A bit of built in obsolescence.

Fiat Punto. My ma had one a few years back. Not only is it plug ugly, whenever you go round a right hand bend, the bloody A pillar makes it impossible to see where you're going.

To me Punto always sounds like an Italian word for small fart, so I could never take them seriously no matter how good / bad they are.

And @cue2 you should go and work for BMW's design dept

Wow, the BMW caricatures take some beating. Yes, I think that is how people actually do view BMWs.

Do motorbikes count?
I hate the Charlie and Ewan wannabies in the adventure stuff and the biking Methuselahs on Hardly Able Tos all kitted out with way too bright retina damaging lights that I have to shut my eyes.

Yeah, that's safer.

The Smart ForFour. This very much fits in the original “illogical” envelope. It’s small, inoffensive, reasonably well packaged and capable of supporting a night time sleepover if the old TG piece is to be believed. I just detest them. You don’t see many but when you do they make your skin crawl. Even it’s effing name is annoyingly up its own arris.

I'd say the Smart ForFour very much fits into the rational hatred category - it's a badge-engineered Renault Twingo being sold for a lot more money purely on the value of the Mercedes-Swatch-Smart brand. Besides, the ForGo is both teeteringly tall for it's length and rear engined, so must surely be one of the most dangerous modern cars to drive in the wet.

And that's reminded me of another Mercedes monstrosity which very much fits in the rational hatred category - the original ML series. Dreadful cheapo trim, ugly, slow, uneconomical, so hopelessly unreliable it dragged Mercedes below Alfa in the reliability index of the time, and despite being a (sortof) 4x4 it was hopeless offroad and useless in the snow. And for some reason despite the ML being possibly the worst car Mercedes had produced up to that point their owners still had a certain air of smugness about them, perhaps thinking people were staring and pointing out of admiration rather than exclaiming "What sort of idiot buys one of those?!"

Thankfully they've all-but disappeared now, but there was one S1 ML model which will be missed- the AMG ML55 made a great, cheap engine donor for more deserving AMGs.

Agree re the ML.

Unless they had never steered anything other than a three wheeled supermarket shopping trolley, I can’t see how anyone who’d driven an ML could conclude anything other than it was absolutely diabolical to drive.

It’s a mystery to me how it signed off.

I think most of the cars I dislike are down to the people driving them.

GM's influence and the desire to fleece as many punters as possible for a quick profit might have had something to do with it
