Head or heart.

Hi, I'm currently trying to decide what used estate car to buy my heart is saying Alfa 159 tourismo but my head is telling me to go German, or another volvo. Is there any issues ( reliability/ running cost ) with the 159 that I should consider and any thing I should look for when going out kicking tyres?
Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated
I really want to go with my heart and buy my first Alfa!!!!!

Welcome Ian.

What is your budget and what engine are you thinking of?

The 159 are pretty reliable. Try having a nose through the 159/Brera/Spider
technical lounge. There are loads of threads started by prospective buyers in there
with plenty of advice and tips.

Remember it is the place where people come to solve issues, so the number of questions/threads
is not indicative of the model's overall reliability. Which is pretty good imho.

Modern Alfas tend to be alot more reliable than the old myths suggest.

If you can get a Ti in budget go for that over any other, its what the 159 looks best in.

As Tata4Now said have a browse in the tech section and you will find alot of people who really like their cars.

Thanks guys in not sure on what engine but most of the driving will be urban with a few long runs thrown in each year so it's probably looking like petrol. I've got up to about 6k to spend.

I'd try and get a slightly higher trim than the Turismo (maybe a lusso), there are lots about, don't think there is a huge price differential, and will be worth the extra.

+1 for a 2.2JTS. Get it checked for timing chain and a remap from AutoDelta (knock 500 quid off the price to cover this) to remove
the annoying low rev hesitation and Bob's your uncle.

there is this one in diesel --> Alfa Romeo 159 1.9 JTDM 16V TI 4dr

They are the only 2 options on autotrader for under 7k in Ti form, there is another diesel but its at 140k miles

Edit: ignore this aswell as its a saloon

On that basis there are no Ti SW on autotrader in either petrol or diesel for under 7k

Read the question!
Imagine there are even fewer when that body style comes into the equation .

I did but there was only one that came up so i copied that, forgot to even check if it was estate.

There are quite a few on autotrader but none are Ti for under 7k

Thanks guys that's given me a good start I'm not in any major rush so I can afford to look around and hang on.

I read somewhere about odd tyre size which makes them a little more pricy and the front tyres wearing on the inside is this right or have I got this all wrong.

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

There was an issue with inside edge tyre wear, there was an issue with the set up from the factory, i beleive this was rectified for 08 onwards but im not 100%, there is a massive thread on it in the 159/brera/spider section.

Alot of people have theirs realigned anyway, along with all the other mods they do

The Ti has 19" alloys which make the tyres a bit more expensive, cant comment on the smaller 17" and 18" options but i would imagine they were fairly standard sized tyres?

Most of it will be covered in the bigger threads in the tech section, ive not had mine long so im probably not the best to ask. But from what ive read on here it is

How long since last cambelt change
Check for subframe rusting
Excess tyre wear
squeaking suspension

Not sure about much else
