Please don't upset me.........

..........but having bought a new Giulietta my 156 is now surplus to requirements but what can expect to get for it?

Here is a brief summary:

2001 156 SW Veloce 1.6 Petrol
One owner
275,000 Motorway Miles
FARSH 26 Dealer Stamps
Full Red leather
17" GTA Teledial Alloys
Lowered using Eibach Sportlines

Just had MOT, 4 new shock absorbers, 4 new tyres, cam belt, tensioners and variator, radiator temperature sensor and relay, battery, alternator, torsion bars just to name what I can remember.

On a recent Vehicle Health Check EVERY box showed up as green.

Every brochure, manual and bill of sale from new.

Impeccably looked after and still looks stunning.

Please don't make me cry.

Someone who can see the bigger picture may offer something sensible. A bit off topic but where are those items for sale at the bottom of your post, I'll apologize now for any ignorance, cheers

When you say 'where are they for sale' what do you mean?

They are all part of my collection that I need to thin out!

Financially I think you would be better off breaking it.

The car as a whole is probably only worth about 400-500 where as the GTA wheels on their own would probably be worth a few hundred..

I'd give you 500 for it. Would make a good run about, wonder if it could reach 300,000?

26 dealer stamps and a 100% full bill of health and still only 500????

I may as well keep it until it becomes a 'classic'!!!

The trouble is 156's are struggling to sell at the moment. People are scared of them because of the usual Alfa reliability scare stories.

I am sure it is a nice car, but you are going to struggle especially with such a high mileage.

There's so much else you can buy for 500 these days.. I just bought a 3.0 V6 Sportwagon with a Q2 diff in it for 640. 3k was spent on it 18 months ago on engine swap, full cambelt/waterpump job, solid clutch & GTA flywheel, full front suspension rebuild.. Its only got just over 100k too. The petrol-engined pre-facelift interior cars are worth very little to sell, and the facelift interior & full facelift cars are not worth all that much more. Its only really the diesels that have retained a good bit of value. Its sad for sellers, but great for buyers if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and doing a few jobs. 99% of joe public will be terrified of the mileage and an honest breaker won't be all that interested in it as how can you sell a used engine or box with that sort of mileage on it, no-one would buy it. Most of the money you just spent on it means nothing to a breaker as those parts are all just consumables, as a breaker its not worth much more than what the wheels & leather are worth and what the bodyshell will weigh in at.

I'm sure you know all this already - from how you worded your opening post I think you know its not worth a lot. But you've certainly had your money's worth out of it, 275,000 is a hell of a lot of traveling. My offer was semi-serious, I'm not really in the market to buy right now but I would do for 500 - but I wouldn't really expect you to actually let it go for that sort of money knowing what it means to you, but then again I don't think you'll get many offers for much more.

I agree with dan, but the teledials alone are worth a few hundred minimum.

Quattroporte

Pud's assessment is very fair. It's a thirteen year old car with 300,000 on the clock. No one will touch it.

Compounded by Alfisti wanting the Busso engine - that is a classic - the 1.6 is seen as the poor cousin, and non-Alfisti who might be interested in a 1.6 would never touch a 300,000 Alfa with a barge pole.

It's really sad for sellers but these are the hard facts. My FSH 3.0 166 went for 1k when it was only seven years old and 55,000 (mostly motorway) miles. It's a tough world.

Keep it and enjoy it.

I might have been tempted, but mileage, no matter how many services it's had, or who did them says it ain't got much more to go......break it. I had a figure of 300 in mind, so 500 is pretty much fair.

I think you should donate it as a museum piece, rare petrol engined Alfa with over a quarter of a million miles on it

Gotta be a record of some sort?

The lifespan of a car in Australia is regarded (By Government) as 155k miles for any 4 cylinder vehicle. After that most cars are taken to the beakers or used as parts.

For your info a 6 cylinder car is 310k miles
For any scooter 6k miles
For any motorcycle 12.4k miles

Dont laugh but in Japan any car its 40k miles, hence the reason we have jap car imports with low miles.

Always just assumed with your avatar being red your car would be red as well. That'll teach me not to assume!

Just having a new battery and alternator fitted this weekend then going to stick it in Auto Italia magazine classifieds, i've also written to Alfa UK to see if it is any good to their R & D Department seeing as it has done 275,000 miles on the original factory fitted engine, clutch, gear box and exhaust!

Agreed, but as technology has moved on so much since then I don't even expect a reply!!!

It stil looks timeless sitting there in my drive!

It strange because I still refer to the 156 as 'the Alfa' and the Giulietta simply as the Giulietta, says it all really!
