Am I unreasonable with my garage

The car went in late last Monday as a breakdown. They do seem really busy. Was told they would look at it Thursday. Thursday came and went. Called them Friday and was told what they thought it was. Ordered the part as I can get it cheaper (which they are fine with) to arrive today and collect the car this evening.

Called them today and have been told it's looking like it's not the part I've order which is needed and they haven't yet looked at it at all???

I'm already £200 down and beginning to get the hump.

The key word there is "thought".

If they had ordered the part and it turn out not to be that you would not be liable, right?

Yea that is true. The part I got was 200 and the list price is 529 so I guess it's what you get for trying to be cheap. They did actively encourage me to order it though.

At least you've got it if you need it later on, or you could sell it on again?

I don't understand if they haven't diagnosed the issue ie "haven't looked at it at all" why they would ask you to buy said part, sounds amateurish.

They have historically been brilliant. I've been using them since 2007 and I've been very happy. Just recently there seems to be a lack of communication between staff and they seem to be concentrating more effort on non alfa work despite being an Alfa indie.

If they're busy then you turning up with the parts would've been useful... saves them trying to track it down... so I can see why they might have been encouraging.

Maybe the same seller you bought wrong part from is willing to exchange for whatever is it you need. For example: You buy thermostat for $130 instead it was a sensor $30. so you buy the sensor then you spend the $100 on Spark plugs, or air filter, oil filters etc.

If the garage is busy and you go in at short notice, you are always going to be at risk of being pushed to the back of the queue. It's either time to change garage or just accept the fact you've been pushing for a faster resolution than they have been able to deliver. I've had this many times, smaller garages will try to be helpful when you go in at short notice but sometimes that means you don't get as quick of a turnaround as you hope (because they are often "optimistic" in saying when they think they can get stuff done).

It will be 7 working days tomorrow and still no diagnosis or news. I'm just wondering how long it will take for them to contact me if I don't call them. It's been 3 days tomorrow with no news all.
I do appreciate them taking the car in at short notice but when I've been loyal to them for 6years and bought 2 cars from them I think I should have moved up the que by now.

Sorry to hear your woes Oliver, all you can do is start chasing them. Tell 'em you need it back for Christmas

I appreciate they are busy fair enough, I'm still confused with why they would tell you to buy a part though.

Ok, so I called yesterday morning and the pump and relay was replaced. I asked them to do an extended test drive and it broke down again at lunch time. Lost gearbox drive in 5 th. I've booked a loan car for Monday so I have something over Xmas. (Need more luggage capacity than the GTV). I'm not cross they haven't solved it yet, these things can be difficult. I was just disappointed with the lack of communication and time to diagnose (8 days).

I'll keep you posted.

Glad you got it all sorted in the end, just a shame it took nearly 2 weeks

Oh........broke down earlier. Waited 4 hours for recovery. Just got home, warming up with a cup of coffee and AO.

Back to square one.

Not really the garages fault I don't think as they did do extensive road test.

You're opinion would be very much considered.

Go back to the same place as they know what they have already tried or

Try the garage you use as they seem very helpful on the phone and might have a fresh idea on it?

I guess persisting with the guys who have been dealing is the logical thing to do as they know what has been done; Do you trust them to resolve it? I know that in the past they've been great, so give them one more chance?

As for the guys I use, I would have no hesitation in recommending them, but they would obviously need to have the car to diagnose, and starting effectively from scratch may cost you more....you could always try giving 'em a call first and see what they say over the phone.

Tricky one.

The car is back at the garage and it has them stumped. Im now considering it might be cheaper to change the car to be honest.
