Well Happy Alfa Selespeed sayings

Funny selespeed sayings on Aussie forums what do you guys think?

"It is something that should strike a deep fear into the heart of your wallet"

"ZOMG, it's Selespeed, run hide, lock your doors and hide in the cellar, but whatever you do, PLEASE for God's sake--and your own--don't buy any Alfa with Selespeed.

It would even make The Terminator cry"

"it sounds like a gearbox that doesn't know what it's supposed to be... and hence tries to kill itself at every opportunity"

"Seriously dude ... anyone who buys an Alfa with a Selespeed has rocks in their head"

"I'll probably step on some alfa toes here but they are well known for their faults... some consider it the fun of owning an alfa"

AND NOW FOR THE POSITIVE:

just curious, what is so good about how alfa's drive ?

They design their cars around the driver and they have the amazing ability to make a car feel like an extension of yourself. You can feel exactly where the wheels are pointing, exactly what the suspension is doing, you are part of it not just driving it.

When you drive an Alfa you find yourself changing gears just because it feels good, taking the long way to work just because it has that corner you like and holding second gear just a little longer because it gives you a smile.

Alfas are drivers cars.

One I read in a UK magazine described it as "A gearbox which allows you to change gear just like a learner driver"

I had a Selespeed Veloce 156, I bought it from new and had it for 92,000 miles.

It never skipped a beat and if you drove it like an Alfa should be driven and used the 'gearstick' you were rewarded with smooth, quick gearchanges and lovely throttle blips coming up to RAB's and the automatic selection of 2nd gear for your exit. As far as I could make out, if you drove in a sporty way, you were rewarded, that's how the car was set up.

If you left it in 'Auto' mode it was appallingly clunky and counterintuitive. If that's how you wanted to drive it, shoulda bought an auto Nissan Almera!

I was well aware of the horror stories but mine was a LOT of fun.

Much the same story with me, lots of pleasure and fond memories. Never gave any issue and was pretty cool for its time (first production semi auto IIRC).

Selespeed was one of the things that caused a lot of (non-Alfisti) interest at the 147 launch.

It was also something that has put people off buying another Alfa after they have owned one and had trouble with it.

I have had 2 Alfas and they both stuffed up on me, i still come back.

First one was Alfa 166 3.0 with diff issues, quoted $5500 to fix only drove 800km before i got rid of it.

Second was Alfa 156 2.0TS Selespeed, I used seafoam to clean engine and ruined the Valve seals. Also would not go in reverse and gave Gear Selector issues. But i didnt bother looking into it i hated the smoke from the enigine and got rid of it. Drove 1300km

Third (Now) Alfa 147 2.0TS, No issues so far, needs spark plugs and thermostat. Driven 800km.

Now lets hope i can keep this one.

Regardless i will always come back to Alfa until the day i die.

That might be because you are an enthusiast, we are prepared put up with a lot.

The average Joe, who knows nothing about cars probably liked the look of the 156 with a Selespeed gearbox, and ditched his BMW 318i for one.

If then he had issues he would go back to having a BMW the next time around.
