Alfa GTV V6

Mother of god, what have I done [GTV]?

After spending much of my life owning german, japanese, french, swedish, and english cars, at the ripe old age of 41 I have bought my first Italian car.

It's a 1998 GTV 3.0 V6 Lusso, silver with red leather, collect it saturday.

Please tell me I have done the right thing. Is it going to rust away to a hill of iron filings in a year? Will it explode/conk out every five miles? Will I be kicked out of the AA for over-use of their service?

Seriously, I bought it unseen from eBay - so I need to have a good look around it. When I do, what should I upgrade first? I see lots of stuff about diffs, suspension upgrades etc - what should I be looking at??

It's my first post in an italian car forum, so don't throw pasta at me and get all emotional will you

Yes, you've made a terrible mistake. Alfa ownership is addictive.

As for your technical questions, introduce yourself on the Gtv lounge here.

Posts: 12,744 will love it will never listen to an in car radio/cd while you own an Alfa V6...
Third....composite and zinc coating do not rust so have no fears there.....
Fourth ......upgrades may have already been done but any that you fancy depends on how much you want to spend and how long you want to keep the car....
Drive it as it is for a month/thousand miles and then decide if it needs upgrades. There is plenty of advice in the Gtv lounge. Gtv owners love talking about their prize possessions.
You haven't listed your location but look in the area lounges for meets in your area, it won't take long for you to become totally addicted........

I have owned my TS 5 years and my V6 1 year and neither has let me down. The only thing to "break" on both cars has been the thermostats and they are not made by Alfa Romeo......

Forget everything for a while and just enjoy it!
Then you will want to buy all sorts for the car just for the sake of it

After the morass of boring crap you have been driving the GTV is going to be something of a revelation. This is a car with the best ever V6 engine in the front, this is top gear, this is as close as you get to a Ferrari for proper money

when you drive away on saturday, if your not grinning like an idiot after 500 yards, well its burtons window

when it does need repairs, ask here first and find yourself a good independent repair place, theres loads about

you will wonder why you didnt do it years ago, what a waste of time in that german and jap boring crap

Get a good independent Alfa garage to crawl all over it. Sight unseen is dangerous with any car - and these beasts can rack up some chunky bills if not cared for. Tell the GTV section where you live and they will recommend someone.

Aside from that, you now have one of the finest V6s on the planet in front of you, enjoy.

Thanks for the encouragement folks...collecting tomorrow now and looking forward to it! I have a pal with a two-post ramp so i'll have a good poke about. I live in Kent (near Brands) and I think there is a good specialist there, so if anything needs doing there is someone nearby..

Will post pics when back home and cleaned up.
