Idea New Alfa Romeo names revealed

New Alfa Romeo names revealed | Autocar

Alfa Romeo will call its next two cars the Alfa Romeo Milano and Alfa Romeo Giulia, according to documents released as part of Chryslerís proposed alliance with Fiat.

The names for the replacements for the Alfa Romeo 147 and Alfa Romeo 159 were included in Chryslerís viability plan, submitted to the US government yesterday.

All future Alfas will use names instead of numbers, and Milano and Giulia have history within the brand. The Alfa Romeo Milano name was used for the US-market Alfa Romeo 75, while the Alfa Romeo Giulia was previously used as a model name in the 1960s.

Sources say Alfa Romeo will use a more sophisticated development of the Fiat Bravo platform for both models, with a stretched wheelbase version used for the Giulia.

As part of the global alliance plan, Alfa Romeoís new production line and platforms will be installed in one of Chryslerís factories and Chrysler will then adopt the two platforms for its own future models.

That article is at least 3 years out of date.

The Milano became the Giulietta at the last minute

Giulietta

Alfa had to drop "Milano" as a name because of potential protests from Milanese unions. The launch of Giulietta coincided with the removal of the last Alfa Romeo functions (particularly Alfa Centro Stile) from the Arese complex.

If you look through the Giulietta brochure, the red and silver geometric shapes that overlap the photos are all part of the word "MILANO". The change of name was very late

Still no word on what the big Alfa is to be called, and it's now rumoured for a Paris (September) 2014 launch.

Paris September 2014 Good grief thats ages away. Then it will probably be 2015 before it hits the showrooms, then 2018 before i can afford a used one on the market. Not sure my current 159 can last that long!

Is that the 159 replacement? I thought that was the Giulia? Unless there's an even bigger Alfa coming out to step on the Maserati Ghibli's toes!

Giulietta

The "Big Alfa" is the 166 replacement. It's to be based on the Ghibli, but it'll fill out the range below Maserati's model, with four-cylinder petrol and diesel, and maybe a lower-spec V6 petrol and diesel as the top model.

Giulia, the 159 replacement, is expected next year.
