Original for me. Facelift doesn't look right. And looks too much like the 159.

for a long time i preferred the original and if as i think it will the 156 goes down as a classic then its definitely the one which will be remembered, i personally bought the facelift simply because by the time i got myself a 156 i wanted to get as new a car as i could afford but it has grown on me and now i love the more aggressive look.

either way its one of the most gorgeous saloons ever produced

I've always liked clean elegant designs, so my preference has always been the facelift version. I just love the way all of the lines just flow effortlessly from the grill back through the flanks to the rear light clusters.

For me, the cut-out details around the grill of the original were always a bit fussy (although I know they are a historic reference to Alfas of old), and the front just doesn't flow in the same way.

Of course, that's just my preference.

And I still think that the 156 (both versions) is the sexiest four door ever, bar none.

My personal preference is for the original with no side skirts or spoilers. I don't think either is better though. The original is more delicate, the facelift more agressive.

The facelift is probably unique in being the only facelifted car ever to look as good as its predecessor.

Facelift without any doubt.

I loathe the 916 GTV/Spider facelift though. Looks awful.

I think the facelift has a much more aggressive appearance, which is why I wanted one, but I do like the original, however I also prefer the facelift dash.

The facelift dash is definetly better. The original dash was quite bland, unless if it was finished in chrome.

Salute, Giordano.

Hi

Early shape for me. While the updated front does have some attractions it doesn't really match the rest of the car.

To me the 159 just looks like someone with little artistic ability tried to copy a 156.

All the best

Love the facelift front, love the original rear. Love the wagon the most. The GTA makes the old style front look better. When I build my facelift GTA I will have the best bits of both styles on my car IMO. Obviously this is my taste mind

This. When i bought my 156 i was looking for a long time until i found a facelift veloce.
When looking for a GTV V6 i only looked for phase 2 ones. The facelift on the 916 is plain horrible (to me).

These threads come and go and it will show once again that we agree to disagree.

Going off topic...if the facelift GTA was available from day one I would of been sold on one. Would of been an even bigger jump from a 1.8 160bhp MG ZR.

I prefer the original,in sportpack form.

The Facelift looks ok at the front, but not keen on the rear lights of the crease on the bootlid.

The biggest issue with the facelift is that you cannot get a 2.0TS

when it first came out i thought the facelift had lost the plot, however now i think its the best looking saloon bar none, need to be low though and for my money the SW is the one to have

just a shame the build quality is so bad, well i think it is anyway, but i wouldnt chage it

has to be orinigal for me. Alfa got the whole design very right, the whole car is a classic waiting to happen. I think they lost it slightly when the facelifted version came out, not that its a bad looker but the original was just God damn gorgeous!

What Joss said plus the facelift interior from the very latest 156's as my 05 156 seemed to have almost leather like (still fake) finish on the dash, compared to the usual pimpled effect.

Salute, Giordano.
IMO best combo is 2002 facelift dashoard and original exterior with sideskirts

Facelift looks more modern but for me the original is more "Alfa" and thus better. The scallops are part of the Alfa heritage and Da Silva had to fight the bean counters to keep them. Got to love design principles that evoke the Alfa heritage regardless of production costs.

Personally prefer a "clean" 156, keep the sideskirts for the GTA. Just lower the unadorned 156, put it on 17" wheels and you have a beauty.

Cheers,

Nigel
