What made you buy your Alfa?

For me it all started when I was a small boy! My dad bought a Silver 33 Cloverleaf and proceeded to drive it like he stole it, with or without me in the car! He spent most of his spare time fixing it, and one of the fondest memories I have of being a child was, after some recurring throttle issues, he proceeded to remove the entire air intake housing leaving the throttle bodies exposed, and drove it like that for some time. It sounded amazing, and probably started my entire auto-mobile love affair!

It was only then a matter of time before I got my own back in 2002. A 147 2.0TS Lusso, Selespeed, which would have been 100% perfect had it not been for the Selespeed!

I am now on my second Alfa, after a few years of less interesting cars (Lotus, MG, BMW, Audi, Smart (Yes Smart), Land rover and Jaguar and wondering why I wasted my time with any of those other marques?

Its good to be back!

Question is, what brought you here?

GT Cloverleaf

I've got my Brother-in-law to thank. He bought a 156 facelift years ago and I fell in love. The sound and looks were fantastic. Left a lasting impression in the back of my mind not just because I nearly broke my thumb on the rear door lol.

A few months after I passed my test I saw a wee 147 in Red in a local dealer. Wanted it so much but couldnt afford it or probably the insurance so ended up buyin the mito a few years after and havent looked back.

Blind luck.

Looking to replace an old N-reg fiesta we were going to a couple of car supermarkets figuring it'd give us a chance to poke about in a wide range of models to rule a few out quickly before we started looking at specific cars. Hadn't even considered an Alfa, but then driving from one place to the next we happened upon a fiat/alfa dealer so we stopped off just to have a nosey.

Shiny shiny shiny 147 in Proteo red in the showroom.

Here are my credit card details, Mr Car Salesman...

Was much the same with me this time. I "wanted" a 535d M-Sport twin turbo purely for its engineering, aggressiveness & toys (head-up display anyone?) so took one for a spin, and it felt a bit "meh.." Drove all the way to Veloces in North London to "get the Alfa bug out of my system" and bought it on the spot. I actually abandoned the car I drove down in in their car park and said I'd come back for it at some stage..... (as it was the wife's old Jag, I was "forced" to go retrieve it a couple of days later, its on auto-trader now!

I was looking for a bigger hatchback than the Corsa I had. Went looking at the usual suspects, Focus, Golf, Peugeot etc and they did nothing for me. Saw a 147 at one of the garages and that was it I wanted one. The next weekend Mangoletsi had an ad in our local paper for brand new 147's so off I went and bought a new '03 plate Alfa Red 147 Lusso with upgraded 16'' Sport wheels (alloys have to be right on the car) - since then it's been Alfas all the way; a 156 and then 4 159's

Alfa 156 2.4 JTD

I was looking to replace my Focus ST170 after having spent too much on it. Just wanted something reliable that I could get with the money from selling the ST. Was poking around a rather dodgy looking garage after playing with some ex-plod Volvos and spotted my 156. No service history, engine wasn't quite right but it was *cheap*. Did a bit of internet research (including this mighty forum) and came away with a 2002 156 2.4 JTD with only 66 000 miles for a mere £1400. Got the problems sorted, had the clutch replaced and some new shocks on the back and I'm now very happy.

I ran a similar post like this https://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/gener...d-of-alfa.html

However my love started all the way back when i was three years old after a trip to an Italian restaurant, where the owner gave me an Alfa Bandiera. It was ment to be, ive pledged to always drive Alfas, and having family members who have owned Alfas it was in the blood.

Ever since then i lived and breathed Alfa. Im now 19, studying at uni, driving a 159, a member of AROC NSW and trying to land a job for Alfa, preferably in the marketing department. I have a file on my usb "Blue and Me" named "Alfa Songs" where i have songs from Alfa ad's on there which add to the Alfa atmosphere. Iam honestly obsessed with the brand.

Salute, Giordano.

Ever since I was young I've always loved Italian cars - they are my passion

First Alfa was a 156, then I had a 159 1.9 JTDM before my current 147 (this being the first used car I ever bought due to us not needing 2 large new cars

Plan to have a Brera next more than likely - although completely impractical for my needs tbh...but it's just so stunning

Brera

Two or three years back I saw a Brera and thought wow, I had to have one. I could not stop thinking about it but never thought it would be affordable. When it came to changing cars last year, I took a look at Brera prices and thought maybe I could. It was a choice between the brera and an unmentionable. There was only one choice. I can't stop smiling when I pass the big dealership of thebrand that lost out.

I've always liked Italian cars, way back when in my 20's I was driving an MGB, I pulled into a garage near Guildford and got all passionate over a Lancia Fulvia 1300, I wanted it. The salesman put me off, trying to sell me a Ford Escort instead. So I never got my Italian car at that point (I never had an Escort ether!). In the late 70's I was pulling spanners for a living and did some work for a car dealer who sold Italian cars. I remember the Fiat Miafiori's best, I wanted one of those, but the rust! Then there came the Alfa Romeos, services and clutches on a variety of models including the Alfetta GTV, those cars were (are) wicked to drive, but a female dog to change a clutch on. Anyhow, I still did not get to own one.

My next touch with Alfa Romeo was in the 90's, I had a Snap-On Tools franchise and my favorite call of the week was Tates in Portslade, the Alfa Romeo dealer, I would drool over the 156, but still no Alfa Romeo for me.

In 2001, I was in a position to buy a new car!! It was down to a Saab 93 2.2 Tid or a 156 2.4 Lusso. When I look back, at this point I was overcome by incurable madness! I bought the Saab!! I did this as I allowed myself to be advised by bar stool experts who had never owned an Alfa Romeo, but 'knew someone who had loads of trouble with one'. Mmmm, what a sucker I was! Anyway, the Saab turned out to be the worst car I had EVER owned with so many faults, that Saab paid for the extended warranty! You will be surprised to read that after this my next car was a Saab, the 159 had just come out and I did not want to buy a 156 as it was the 'old' model, I was very happy with the way Saab had looked after me, and the new car a 93 1.9 Tid was a good car (Fiat engine you see!)

Anyway, time is running out now, and if I dont get a move on I'd be in the market for a Honda Jazz or something (not really, never!), so in early 2009 the search started for my Alfa Romeo, it had to be a diesel, I could not afford the petrol versions with my milage, it had to be red (arnt all Italian cars red?) and it had to have natural or beige leather, and Lusso spec and no more than a year old. But to be honest, I would have been flexible on the colour if the right car showed up.

Anyhow, my first (at last) Alfa Romeo is an Alfa red 159 SW Lusso with beige leather. It will not be my last.

Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".

Giulia Super Lusso 2.0MA, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2, plus Abarth 595 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.

147 1.6 TS Lusso

My first memory of one was from the guy over the road from where we used to live he had a Red 75 at the time He used to clean it every weekend and I remember the sound it made. I used to sit out in the summer waiting for him to come home from work just to look and listen to it. Over the years he changed to a 155 and then we moved up the village.

I passed my test and was pondering what to get, ended up buying my mates bosses wifes Alfa GTV 2.0TS off her for my first car and fell in love. Now on my second (not sure when I'll get it back) now a 147 1.6 TS after 12-18 months of Ford/Mazda and driving the wifes 500 then Punto Evo Sporting I'm back and shall never leave again.

Now dying to get mine back. But planning for the day I can buy a Spider.

Current:
2005 147 1.6 TS Lusso - Black
2011 Punto Evo Sporting 135 - Progressive Black

Long gone:
1998 GTV 2.0 TS Phase 1 - Proteo Red - S++RVG

I had wanted a 166 for a long time but I thought the cost of buying one & insurance was going to be too much, but was given some money by my mum as a present, so did my research on insurance & cost of buying & found mine on Autotrader through a dealer. Got it, & loved it ever since!

It was time to move on from Freddie, my F reg Nova about four years ago, when I saw a ph1 Spider at the garage opposite my in laws. It was stunning!! I didn't buy that one but drove all the way to Leeds to find my first Alfa, Rosso red, Lusso trim ph2 Charlotte she was a beauty and it was at first sight.

With the second Alfa it was a needs must due to an unfortunate accident.
'I need a car, it MUST be an Alfa' I considered a 147 and a Vela Blue spider before I found Apheodite, the only ad apart from one I just missed out on, which made me stop and go 'oooh'
She was better looking than Charlotte, with a metallic gleam I couldn't get my eyes off

Clearly has the most reliable Alfa in the world

After owning lots of Vespas and Lambrettas I was looking to buy my first car. My dad started pointing out bargain price Alfasuds in Autotrader (this was back in 1990) and I became obsessed with owning one, partly due to the styling and partly due to continuing the Italian connection. Bought a Sud 1.5 SC and discovered fairly quickly the reasons for bargain prices! It started to rust away, but I still loved it. My dad blames me for his Alfa obsession as he bought a 33 after seeing my Sud, but he started it by suggesting an Alfa for my first car!

Well my first car was a corsa, but since then i've been sticking with Italian cars. First I had a punto sporting which did the trick for a second car being a little, well... sportier. Next I had the turbo version of the mk1 punto, the GT which was tuned to a proven 170bhp and blew the ******** off of most things on the road due to the power to weight ratio I guess. After 2 years with the GT i really got tired of the tired, cheap interior and ride quality however and so I bought the alfa... Not as torquey as the GT but SUCH a nicer drive and place to be and that engine note also played a big part in it

V6 goodness as of 09/01/11

I was looking for a replacement for a saxo (1.1 desire, nice ) that was suitable for longer journeys. Was heading for a Focus but got sidetracked by a 147, once I'd sat in the drivers seat of a lusso and looked down at the dials with the italian wriring I just had to have it.

I was (and still am) planning on a 156 GTA at some stage, but for now I needed an every day runner, so a 159 TI gave me enough of the heritage while meeting my needs. Next years bonus is already allocated to a 156 GTA, as I fancy a project car to play with.

156 2.0 veloce

i was looking for a saab 93 drophead or similar and after seeing shed after shed i got bored and went back to work only to find the garage next door to me, one of the mechanics had a honda civic vtec estate and a 156 veloce 2.0 for sale. he said i could have the honda for 1300 or the alfa for 650 as it stood (it had been standing for 8 months with no mot) i was very sceptical over the alfa after hearing all the doomsayers but as it was owned from new by the garage i figred it must have been looked after so we settled on 800 for the alfa with a years mot (done by a different garage obviously) and so here i am.
