garage quote...is this fair?????

Hi all....

have recently had around £1500 worth of work done at a particular garage..i wont name names unless i find out they are taking the mikey....( the £1500 has been paid )

anyway....my bonnet cable needs to be replaced..they have quoted me arond £18.00 for the cabe..but in total about £73.00 with fitting as it wil take an hour or so...is this about right???

also..the the engine management light is on and they 'think' it is the MAF..so they have phoned me up and told me they have a MAF in that they can try on the car..if it is that it wil be £141.00....

however,,,they have said that they are jsut going to 'try' it on the car..i asked if i could take the car for a test drive with the new MAF fitted...to which i was told a resounding no.
One of the mechanics wil take it for a raod test to see IF it is the MAF....
If i drive it then i wil have to buy it...this is what they have said.....

now...ive read up on this and seem to get the undertsanding that if it is the MAF i wil most certainnly notice a differnece in the way my car performs...if thsi garage are only going to plug it in and drive it to see if it is the MAF surely there would be no differnece in me driving it??
it is not like im going to drive away from them as they are only 3 miles from me and know where i work etc etc .....

i would realy appreceiate any advice...i jsut get the impression that if their mecahnic drives it they ARE going to say its the MAF without a doubt.......and again charge me the earth..its jsut a feeling i have with them....

again any advice?

thanks!

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

£18 for the cable sounds ok

guess it depends on labour costs - which vary a big deal depending on where you go. a decent alfa indy will be charging £50+ per hour so sounds ok to me.

re MAF - if they say you need a new one and your not convibced, take it for a drive yourself before you pay

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

hmm, you think you need one? get someone local to try their (known to be good MAF) in it.

you will notice the difference yourself - and make sure its BOSCH

if your not happy buy and fit yourself / with help.

real easy and cheaper too

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

Says thats ok, but get them to write on the invoice, "MAF to be tested" or something similar. At the end of the day, if they test drive it, they must be able to tell if the new MAF has solved the problem or not.

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

I'm not particularly convinced by what they've told you.... They would have a MAF in stock and it's a 5 minute job to put a decent one in to check it. Not sure why they won't let you take it for a drive... stick a mechanic in the passenger seat or take a swipe of your credit card if they're worried about you doing a runner.

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

ask to have it back BEFORE they fit the MAF, mark it with a pen or some kind of ink, then take it back, if they say its the MAF make sure they have at least changed it

Re: garage quote...is this fair?????

Leave them well alone - i would never trust that mob, why have they lost their franchise, they are not up to the job of being an AR dealership.

Used to be an Alfa dealership is not a ringing endorsement... Are currently an Alfa dealership is also not necessarily a ringing endorsement

Find yourself a good indy that has been recommended by forum members... the sticky thread on recommended garages at the top this foum is a good place to start.
