Really intersting. Imagine 1 million + miles in a C2

I've always been convinced I made the right choice in October

And these are of course all based on hypothetical MPG figures

Re: What Car Petrol/Diesel debate?

For years we've had to listen to diesel owners gobbing off about torque and mpg and in-gear acceleration blah blah blah...

Hopefully this will shut them up.

But I doubt it.

Re: What Car Petrol/Diesel debate?

For me diesel ownership is all about the the greater mpg and the torque for in gear acceleration !!

And unlike some I keep an open mind about what my next cars fuel will be

On the last page of the article it says the break even point for the C1 is 134,150 miles, not 1.3 million miles..

My understanding is that that figure is based on fuel prices in May 2007 when petrol and diesel were similarly taxed I mean fairly priced.

Further down the page the 1.3 million mile figure is based on fuel prices as of May 2008.

Re: What Car Petrol/Diesel debate?

They didn't even mention that petrols are usually more fun to drive, and usually handle better due to lighter engines.

So basically unless you buy new and plan to sell soon or you do big miles after then the petrol is the better bet.

I can see diesel residuals dropping very sharply soon, as the price gap between petrol and diesel will grow even wider IMO..

Blimey, those GTA's with the heavy V6's must handle crap then.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I knew where it was headed. The diesel bashing on this site is getting so boring.

All forums benefit from a bit of petrol versus diesel debate don't you know.

Re: What Car Petrol/Diesel debate?

It's been done to death on this forum (do a search) There is no correct answer, it's personal choice.

Anyway, i really meant the "not real Alfa's" brigade.

You are right; it is.

And just to prove it I drove an Alfa GT with the 1.9JTD engine the other day and was suitably impressed. The only thing that really disagreed with me was the engine noise, especially from the outside (it just sounded wrong to me, coming from such a beautiful looking car); however the character of the engine seemed to suit the true grand touring nature of the car. 45 mpg would be nice too, although on balance I'd still go petrol.

Cool, balanced, objective accurate opinion. I wish they were all like this.

mpg's never been a big issue for me anyway - it's the nature of the power delivery that attracted me in the first place and continues to do so.

Besides - what Nomes said. I wouldn't have a problem going back to petrol if I found the right engine delivering the right kind of power (and that means torquey). Fuel type is not an issue at all; wheras it seems to be with those dyed-in-the-wool petrolheads that keep banging on about diesels as if they are the same pieces of kit that were around 10 years ago.

Back on topic (slightly ) according to Glass's it takes a Diesel on average 7 years to pay for itself in fuel costs.

Re: What Car Petrol/Diesel debate?

When I bought the GT new, Alfa were selling them for £1000 less that the JTS. The performance is similar, the fuel economy is vastly different. From a cost point of view it was a no brainer (and I have just done the maths again and it still is, even at today's diesel prices) the only thing the JTS had going for it was it didn't sound like a tractor. As much as I love the JTD, if I did not do the mileage I do - I would trade it in tomorrow for an Arese V6 GT.
