Should you trust your service history?

The 156 SW I have for sale has a fully dealer stamped service history. So I assume that the cambelt got done at 72k like the book says. Well, theres a main dealer stamp there. Just to be sure I took the cambelt cover off yesterday as the belt should still look brand new. It doesn't. It's old. I rang the dealer in question to ask if they'd done it and they said not. Making the stamp in the book pretty worthless. The car is sold now, so needless to say I'm going to have to fit a belt to it.

When I was a service manager we used to get customers in that were due a cambelt but opted not to have it done. I used to write on their service book below the stamp "cambelt not changed" and sign it. It sometimes prompted them to get it done. I don't think adding a stamp without this warning if the belt is due and not been done is very clever.

I always keep the receipts to prove what has been done.

Re: Should you trust your service history?

The times mine's had its belt done I've had the stamp and then the manager has hand written "belts changed" and initialled the page.

Plus this is why people should keep reciepts for all work done on the car - its reassuring to potential buyers and provides a much more thorough history than a simple service book.

Yeah here we have something called a Roadworthy Certificate that you need to transfer registration on your car when you sell it on.

I bought my car with a roadworthy but then found out that due to the amount it had been lowered, it actually shouldn't have passed. But shh about that...
