Future Classic? 166 Pre-Facelift 3.0 Super

I've been sitting outside watching the evening early-June sunlight reflecting of the scalloped flanks of my Rosso pre-facelift 199 Super.

First thought - This car is a genuine future classic. It's rare and non-GM. If I look after it it won't be worth loads, but for those in the know will be well loved and at least worthy of pampering and discussion.

Second thought - As an avid petrol-head I notice a struggle within prestiege manufaturers to bring anything better-looking to the party (Chris 'The Mangle' Bangle' screwing BMW styling - OK he did style the last Fiat Coupe, but I think that looks like a monkfish on a rollerskate) and F1 fuelled design apathy at Benz is equally a turn-off. Audi? 80, A4, A6, Zzzzzzzz....

As a Brit and hving seen last years XF-C concept, I had high-hopes for the Jaguar XF, but the production car's styling is just too crass & fussy. If the 166 is the beautifully understated 'Mona Lisa', the XF is 'The Scream' with sideburns and wearing Dame Edna's glasses while running around with her gob wide open. If there was a bit of Alfa 166 within Jaguar styling then maybe they would truly be able to be proud of their 'Grace with pace' ethic.

Thoughts please.

Graze e ciao - Crayf.

I still think my 164Q is too beautiful to part with, so I'm even more pathetic.

Sorry guys, but I think the last model 166 will be the real
classic. Dunno how they did it, but that last facelift put
it in another league.

The GTV / GTV Spider and perhaps Alfa's Savior the 156 are the only modern (2000 era) Alfa's that are future classic material IMHO.

Very happy to be proved wrong though

The facelift 166 3.2 looks amazing, saw a lot in Rome earlier this year, don't really rate the pre-facelift front to be honest.

Agreed. Black & White had a new one last November when I bought my Ti. I really wanted it

Trouble is, they wanted 20k for it and it would have been worth c8k the minute I drove it off the forecourt

166 is a car that will always stir-up a debate. Personally, i love it! Does everything i ask of it. Family transport doesn't come more stylish than a 166. For the alfa fan like me with a large family there is nothing else i would consider. (Apart from a quattroporte!)

Re: Future Classic? 166 Pre-Facelift 3.0 Super

i agree, the front end will always cause a debate, some say ugly some say characterful, i prefer the pre facelift to the bland eurobox front end of the facelift. without the grille the f/l 166 is just ANother euro car from the front.

im not a fan of any of alfa attempts to facelift their cars, they seem to remove all character when they face lift them, the 147 had a great front end until they ruined it with the facelift, same goes for the 156. ok the facelifts of all three look more modern and up to date but very bland in comparison to the original designs.

i dread to think what they will do to the 159's front end, put a plastic cover over those gorgeous headlights?

I have never been a fan of newer Alfas including my 147,today I met a 166 owner in Lisbon('98 model) whilst on business. It is the first time I have closely inspected one, what a car!I am really impressed with it.The front is a bit of a shocker but after a couple of minutes it grows on you.
Regards

I agree with you on the 156 and 147 facelifts, I really don't like them. However, I think the 166 facelift is absolutely stunning.

Agree. It looks better than the original which did look a bit odd at the front. And much rarer as well. Saw one near me and looked well . The 166 is nice, but this is nicer.

Cheers,

Nigel

Sorry, but you're wrong (Oooh, get you!). The pre-facelift 166 has a more measured, delicate, organic & female beauty that the Germanic 'drop-jawed' face-lifted car. Time will prove me right.

Which do you prefer?...

Yes, I agree with both of you. In almost every instance, the facelifted version has lost something of the original's charm and appeal. Of course there have been exceptions along the way.

The 147, GTV and Spider were all ruined particularly by their surgery and though the 156 fl isn't that bad, I don't think it needed touching in the first place. Rarely is a car produced which has absolutely no discernible flaw from any angle. The 156 is impossibly attractive, even now, 11 years later.

I think that the fl 166 looks just as nice, but in a more masculine way as opposed to the feminine beauty of the original. Could never understand why so many people dislike it's "face".

Other improvements over the originals have been the plastic bumper Alfetta GTVs and the S4 Spider over the S3 ( hard not to better that mess ).

I am sure that there will be many people eager to buy your car from you in the future as good design is timeless.
