Cam belt on my 156

Good afternoon all,

I have recently baught a 156 it has 73000 miles and is a 2002 plate. in the log book in is down as having the cam belt changed at the start of last year. On closer inspection I am a little wary of this.

Is there a way I can check this has been changed??

I presume this must have been changed by now or the engine would have already have gone BANG!!!

Re: Cam belt on my 156

If you are in any doubt get it changed. 350 for a belt and tensioner change is a lot cheaper than 1000 odd for an engine rebuild.

The problem with looking at the belt is that it might look pretty new even after many thousand miles.

Re: Cam belt on my 156

I was in exactly the same situation when i bought mine six months ago. I decided to get it changed. Was worth it for peace of mind.

Also it's not like you're really saving any money by not getting it done as even if it was changed 18 months ago you'll have to have it changed in 18 months anyway.

Get the variator done as well and the water pump if the car has done over 75,000 miles.

Re: Cam belt on my 156

I have now found out from the garage that did the job that it has been done 17 months ago. Am I ok to wait until the next time I change it in about a year to change the water pump and variator as I will not really get past 80K by then?

Re: Cam belt on my 156

I would personally wait until the 3 years gap - now it's be confirmed to have been changed (by the garage concerned).

If you want 100% piece of mind (mainly the waterpump), get it done now.

The variator isn't urgent - if your car doesn't sound like a diesel on start up...its not a problem, but do get it changed on the next cambelt change.
