'Cause technology has moved on and newer cars tend to be faster, safer and more reliable than older cars.

Emission controls have slowed down the smaller engines. My 77 Spider with Spica was quick and felt strong. My 90's Spiders have to fight to get around the pollution controls.

So what?

They might be slower but give me 1000 alternative models and in 999 cases I'd still rather climb into an Alfa.

Get a re-map and CDA and new exhaust. My 2.0 TS doesn't feel slow anymore

What Biggy said but I would add as a knock on affect although most modern cars will be faster than their counterparts because of advances in manufacturing they don't feel the same as they once did (essentially like comparing a Raleigh Grifter with a Modern full suspension off road bike)

Ah, the Raleigh Grifter. Now there was a bike.

I had a Grifter XL.

Re: like for like alfa's are slow.....discuss.

i'd hardly say alfas are slow these days...

i'm pretty confident mine would destroy pretty much any other 2 litre saloon car who fancied a rumble. the only petrol cars quicker than mine will be either bigger capacity, turbocharged, or in a much smaller car... fancy a race?

It most certainly is Simon.

The Grifter XL was a sort of 'special edition' Grifter that had a different paint job and a few extra trim bits etc.

Apparently it was the inspiration behind the 159 Ti.

Re: like for like alfa's are slow.....discuss.

I might have this the wrong way round, but I don't think he's criticising Alfas for being slower than other current marques, he's saying that the modern Alfas are slower than older Alfas.

To some degree it's true. With all the safety requirements cars are naturally heavier nowadays. My first car, a 1.3 Polo Sport could beat most things at the lights, and I mean most, (however it would then be overtaken 20 yards down the road), the point is that the car was nothing more than seats and an engine surrounded by tin.

TopGear did a test on this a while back, they raced modern cars with their older equivalents along a drag, and in most cases the older car won.

Except tellingly the Golf GTi, people go on about the Mk1's and how quick they are but the latest GTi is still faster by quite a lot (in a straight line from a standing start)

Well said! True it would be nice if we had class leading performance figures, but really it's the driving experience that counts, and Alfa win that one hands down over any of their competition, I even sing to myself in traffic jams since I got mine!
