To the Dark side?

Well I think now that the price of keeping and running the a V6 car has gone sky high in terms of fuel bills, tax and Insurance, in which is only ever going to go one way, I'm pretty certain now that my next car will be a diesel!

Anyone else thinking of turning to the dark side

No - not since my annual mileage has gone from 12-13,000 miles to about 2,000

Re: To the Dark side?

With the extra services and higher purchase cost I would have to do a lot more than my 10 000 km a year to break even.....and the price of diesel is far higher than petrol

Re: To the Dark side?

1.29 per litre for the oily stuff, 1.12 for petrol. You'd surely need a much more economical diesel than an Alfa (2.4) to make this viable, even before you look at the higher purchase price and actually buy into the fact you'll have to put up with an oil burner

Re: To the Dark side?

I find that the 2.5 V6 (156) Very thirsty, and was looking at some 1.9JTDm's 156's (facelifted) I have a heavy right foot cause of the engine egging you on, and with the Diesel, I think i would be getting nearish double the MPG, I'm not sure what MPG you would get from a 2L JTS equivilent

My per annum mileage is only about 9k miles, but, the 1.9JTD engine (JTDm only came in with the 159's) is a very nice engine. Mine had 72k when I bought my 156 f/l and it has just over 80k now, she runs like a dream, its still fast and I am averaging 57.7mpg with a careful foot, but, I ran her ragged a few month ago and still for 49.5mpg out of the tank on average.

If you feel you want a diesel, at least try one. If you don't like it you can alway just downsize you petrol engine.

Re: To the Dark side?

Oddly enough a fair few diesel owners I know are talking of swapping back to petrol. You only notice an advantage if you swap from a thirsty petrol to a good economic diesel (some are not). Then you have to do a highish mileage to feel any real benefit IMO

It still cheaper running Bella then it was running my 1.4 Rover 214... I was only getting 30mpg from that and I am getting about 55mpg out of the Diesel now.

Re: To the Dark side?

I'm considering going the other way!

Thinking of a Grande Punto Abarth to replace my 159 1.9 JTDm. I only run cars for 9/10k miles (that's 3 months). I think that I'll be better off with that the way diesel is climbing.

I honestly can't see the Punto returning any less than very late 30's, maybe even 40 mpg which is about the same as all of my 159's

I'm in exactly the same boat as you Snokio, I have a 2.0 TS returning 28-29mpg and I do 15,000 miles a year. Diesel is now 10% more expensive than petrol but I'm led to believe by many posters here that with a similarly heavy right foot, I'll get 45-50mpg, a 50% improvement in consumption, even looking at it conservatively. Allied to this, I can get a remap to get the power up to 170bhp with plenty of torque and I can fit a Q2 diff which will give tight handling. It'll never sound as good as a twinny but with the govt hell bent on persecuting the motorist with punitive tax on CO2 levels, a 2L petrol engine is gonna feel the pinch, let alone a V6.

Sad, but certainly for me, it's the way to go.

a 1.9

Tax 155 a year in 2010 and lower insurance than a 2.4 (although the 2.4 is a engine)

Re: To the Dark side?

the problem with the price of fuel is not the cost of the fuel its the cost of the tax on the fuel our wonderful government feels it neccecery to put such a large tax on it that 80% of the price we pay goes to mr brown

Re: To the Dark side?

Diesel is set to get more and more expensive... You need to do some maths... Personally I'd need to do a lot of miles to justfiy the expense in initial engine outlay of buying a diesel. But everyone's circumstances are different!

Re: To the Dark side?

My last diesel i didnt think was very economical. It was french and was supposed to be one of the best but it was nothing special in my opinion. Plus, diesel engines are so complicated now that they cost a fortune when they go wrong. Diesel cars are more expensive to buy at the start and although i think they are cheaper to run at the moment who knows how much longer that will be the case.
