Used Car Warranty: worth it?

Hello all.

I bought my '04 GTV from a VW garage last year as 'used approved', so it came with 12 months warranty as part of the package. The warranty runs out next month and I've spent a fair while today putting together a range of alternatives from various companies.

My main question is this:
How much have you spent on your Alfa in the last 12 months that would have been covered by a warranty? (Alternatively, has your warranty been a worthwhile expense?)

I guess I'm trying to get a feel for some of the potential big repairs, and balance that against the cost of cover.

Thoughts and comments gratefully received!

Daniel

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

I got my 156 last July/August. Before the year was out it had been back under warranty to have a new steering rack as the steering lock wasn't coming off until 2 or 3 minutes (or sometimes longer) after the engine had been running.

I dunno what it would have cost without my warranty, but I reckon it was worth having one.

It's worth getting an MOT or check done before your warranty runs out, so any identified faults can be fixed

Agreed - MoT & service next week, so hopefully any flagged issues can be dealt with by VW - although they won't touch routine service parts.

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

I got mine from a independent dealer, and it came with a 3-month warranty. They gave the car a new service and MOT when I picked it up. But later I found out that both the cam belt and variator haven't been changed - the cam belt change was already due (41k on the clock and the car is about 7 years old), the variator was on its way out (it was making that 'disel' sound on start-up), so I had them changed both under warranty.

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

Thats a tricky question. I got 1 year with mine. There was an option of buying another 3 or 4 years on top but it was a lot of money. I know people that always buy extra warranties, some have no problems with their cars, others are glad they spent the money. But i think you have to weight it all up. I was offered, i think, the possibility of a 5 year warranty which meant i would be paying for 4. I had a good look around the car, took for a wee spin and decided 1 year would be sufficient. It was a highly recommended place, they are Alfa specialists and serviced it with a full cambelt change and MOT before i picked it up. Good guys. If the worst happens and it not warranty i will no doubt regret not paying the extra, but i have people that no a thing or 2 about cars and are only happy to help me sort it out. Plus, there is always you guys on here who are only too happy to give technical advice.

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

Thanks for all your input. I'm still at 6's and 7's on this one; a Warranty Direct warranty gives very good cover, but is £500. Extending the VW warranty is £345 but has quite a few exceptions. No warranty costs nothing...tricky choice.

Avoid Warranty Direct... I had a bad experience with my pug 306.

I have a prestige AA warranty. It costs £20 a month and covers almost everything except wear and tear (as usual) and the exhaust, ABS and air con systems.

Why not compromise? and do what I do....

AA Breakdown Warranty (you need AA membership):

Used it on my first ever Alfa, and they were great!

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

The AA seems like a good option. I bought my 156 from arnold shark and they wanted £700 for a years cover

Re: Used Car Warranty: worth it?

Yes, that does look like a good compromise. I hear the warnings about Warranty Direct, but even so their level of cover is very tempting:

£5k claim limit **
Total claims up to the value of the vehicle
Wear and tear cover **
Consequential damage cover **
Diagnostic costs (if resulting in a claim) **
Cracked engine block **
13 months cover **
£25 excess
£41.66 x 12 monthly payments (£500 p/a)
Will pay Alfa dealer rates
High contribution rates to recovery, car hire and emergency accom

** items are not covered (or are significantly less) with other warranties I have looked at (AA-£299, AXA-£378, VW-£345, click4warranty-£335)

This seems pretty good, although I am still wavering. £500 would go a very long way to paying off the credit card. But a thrown belt could run to 1000's.

The car is usually very well behaved. I think warranty companies prey on the fear factor - if I was rolling in dough I would just get the warranty and be done, but as money is tight it really makes the decision much harder. Planning for failure? Failure to plan?

Staring to sound like an old maid! More thoughts encouraged, and thanks for the comments so far!
