Re: Honest John reviews 149

But the concern I have is that the average punter will see the 3 stars and register them.

It quite negative for a car that hasn't even been launched. And does the brand little good...

Re: Honest John reviews 149

Don't talk rot folks, He's called it a stunning replacement for the 147 and asked for reviews. Honest John is pretty pro Alfa, but doesn't pull his punches and his summaries of cars good and bad points are pretty well 100% reliable. As a journalist as well as a trader in his own right he probably has seen pre-release photos, which is probably why he has given it an initial 3 stars.

If he gets good reports he will up his star rating, or not as the case might be. He has urged lots of people to buy a 159 and has praised the improved quality. Read more of his Alfa reviews and you will see.

He has fought the cam belt fight on behalf of Alfa owners and others. He is currently criticising the poor life span of dual mass flywheels, though his criticism has mainly been aimed at the Ford TDCI engines, it might as well apply to the Alfa engines which use the same technology.

HJ is one of the good guys in motoring journalism, so lay off him.

Re: Honest John reviews 149

Honest John also mentions oil pump failures on TS engines. I have yet to hear of one on this site, and we do generally get most problems on here.

Either owners are not owning up to running the cars low on oil, of the stuff on there is made up.

Re: Honest John reviews 149

Write to him and ask if he makes it up. You will get a rude answer. he relies on his own sources within the trade AND on the quite considerable postbag he gets from from owners.

He isn't called Honest John for nothing, or had you missed that point. He has a very loyal following, and if you read the advice he gives every week to readers questions in the saturday Telegraph motoring section you would see he gives out excellent advice, and has been doing so for quite a few years now. As I said before he is pretty pro Alfa Romeo overall and has been more than fair to them. I don't know many journalists positively recommending the 159 over a BMW, but HJ has been doing just that over the last year or so.

Oil pump failure is quite well documented in the 16 valve TS engine, sometimes by people not putting any oil in, sometimes by conrods poking through the side of the block for no apparent reason.

Re: Honest John reviews 149

I have just looked at the 1994-2000 Fiat punto review and it states that "Heater matrix can leak, and if coolant gets into the ECU it can immobilise the car". Yes it probably would, only the ECU is on the inside of the driver side wing, and the heater matrix is behind the dashboard inside the car. So I can't understand how that could happen.

So who knows where that came from?

Alfalincs, you may be correct with regard to oil pump issues, but I haven't heard of one fail yet. At least no more than any other make of car. I would still be inclined to think that most owners have run the car low on oil, filled it up and had a bottom end fail a few thousand miles latter when there was loads of oil in the engine. They then blame the oil pump as they can hardly say that they run the car low on oil if they want to claim on the warranty.

Re: Honest John reviews 149

I think the reason the car has 3/5 stars is that the website is based on a database, and there is probably no way a page can display without it being complete.

Is there a page for the MiTo yet? We should be seeing that before the 149...

Re: Honest John reviews 149

Well I don't know where you've been the last ten years or so. I can't think of another engine that destroys itself on quite such a regular basis as the Alfa 16Valve TS engine. There sometimes not enough evidence to say what went first. The oil pump has always been one of the suspects. It is always a major suspect when a rod goes through a block on an otherwise well maintained engine, and the TS does more than its fair share of this trick

If you have a bone to pick with HJ about the location of Punto ECUs write to the guy, don't just slag him off. You will get a reasoned reply. I certainly did when I picked him up on something. He's one of the best out there, and as I keep saying, he's a friend to Alfa unlike many other journalists. If he has given the new Alfa a three star rating then he has a good reason for doing so. I think its pretty pointelss to start bashing the guy on the basis of presuming he has no info onthe car when in all probabilty he has, otherwise he wouldn't have written it. He's not short of things to do.

Re: Honest John reviews 149

I just read his review on the 156 and I find it honest and quite helpful.

I don't see why you should knock him for giving the 149 3 stars.

Besides, think about it, 3 stars in the middle, neither good nor poor. Perhaps he has not edited the star system yet and when a new page is created 3 stars appears by default. Would you prefer it had no stars?

I was aware of the tendencies of the 16V TS to go bang, but I thought it was almost always as a result of neglect, or ignorance of timing belt changes. I have heard of them failing due to the crank thust bearing failing as well which allows too much end float in the crank.

I might write to him with regards to the punto though

How anyone can defend that particular page is beyond me. Doesn't matter how "honest" he is, to provide comment on a car on which there is no official material and is two years from launch is just nonsense.

Reply from Honest John

"You're right.

I've taken out all of the ratings.

What happened was the 149 has been impending for a long time so it
was already an entry in cbcb last summer.

We then revamped the website and someone was brought in to write
summaries of all the entries and give them star ratings.

Since then I've been changing the summaries whenever I needed to
visit an entry.

No news on the 149 meant I did not do it for that.

Rgds,

HJ

So there you go..

If he's "pro Alfa" - he's still pretty stingy with his star ratings
No so with the ubiquitous Beemers.......

Still, I'm sure he's very honest

Re: Honest John reviews 149

Sounds fair enough, like I said, it was given 'middle of the road' stars because they had no info on it
