does anyone know much about air filters?

evening all,
I need to replace my air filer to finish off a service on my 2001 gtv TS. It seems like a good opportunity to replace the standard with something that may sound a little 'meatier'. Any ideas - I don't want to spend a lot of cash (who does!). Would a dealer be able to supply one or do they just stock standard parts? I'm slightly dubious of various ebay units. Any advice much appreciated.

I went for an Autodelta replacement panel filter.

That's a nice link - hadn't seen that before

I went for a BMC replacement filter - Beacuse it's italian

On the 156 it's a cylinder - so it's more 'enclosed filters' descripton already. What's in the GTV

Just don't use an oiled filter. It contaminates the hot wire in the AFM and knackers it.

if you over oil them they do.

nothing a bit of contact cleaner can't sort anyhow.

great link - thanks. I didn't see it when I did a search. Not sure what's in the gtv as I haven't had a proper look but it looks (excuse lack of mechanical expertise) quite flat & not 'cone' like.
Cheers - thanks for good advice as always (don't think I risk an oiled one)

Re: does anyone know much about air filters?

I've got a K&N Panel filter, it definitely sounds a lot meatier, the difference is actually quite amazing over the standard filter. I actually prefer the note it gives over an induction kit, which are too loud imo.

Oiled filters will ONLY damage the MAF if they are over oiled by the user, they are not over oiled from the factory.

Get involved!

There can be, a few on here have fitted brand new filters and had MAF problems immediately afterwards. It always says in instructions to use a vacuum cleaner on the filter prior to fitting, or fit it with the MAF removed and run at idle for ten minutes. I've done this when installing a new filter or cleaning and re-oiling and old one and for the extra few minutes work.
