Montreal!

Came across this Montreal a year ago in Penang and apparently its not been sold yet. Very attracted to the car and even test drove it but it drove like a tank. Couldnt get it into reverse gear even and had to embarassingly get out and PUSH! Okay found out about the weird unAlfa like stubby gear lever later. Mechanics advise dont touch it but might consider if there are sources for parts and getting the details right. Real sucker for details. Reread every book I had on Alfas but vague details. The owner told me its the original orange colour and yellow seats. Advice or Ideas anyone?

I think its kinda cool....

Re: Montreal!

It needs to either be a very good one, or very cheap. Those things can cost a fortune to put right - and yes I'd love one!

Re: Montreal!

Asking was RM 70,000 thats about 10,000 sterling, could probably get it down a little as it was on sale fora year now. Friends in Thailand are also saying bring it back as there is not even 1 in the country.

Re: Montreal!

The Monty came in all sorts of unearthly 70's disco colours. I can well believe it's original.

It looks in fantastic condition, you could eat your dinner off that engine.

Re: Montreal!

The Alfa Romeo Montreal Website
This has to be the best source for information about this fabulous car. Well worth visiting for background, technical tips, etc.
I saw a white Montreal at the recent Italian Auto Moto Festival held in Bristol, UK - and instantly fell in love. I know that if I was in a similar situation, and had reasonable certainty about the state of the car, I would probably be camped out on my bank manager's doorstep, trying to secure the funds !!

Re: Montreal!

The Spica fuel injection has all sorts of diaphragms and guff and is murder to get working properly.

Other than that....its just a old car, so if it starts hot and cold, drives smoothly - and if you can - up a steep hill, its probably OK.

Re: Montreal!

Yup

I'd be snapping his hand off I reckon! There's a Montreal up Northumberland way in green who waved at me...the only other one I saw was at a classic car rally at Stoneleigh in Orange 10 years ago and was fabulous. If you have the cashola buy it, it makes perfect sense!

Re: Montreal!

The exterior colour looks like an original but the trim does not seem to match. I think it was more likely to have been all black when new.

Montreals can cost a lot to run but if you get a good one that need not be true. A lot of the horror stories are fabricated.

What is sad is the value is so low even for the good ones.

Re: Montreal!

A fantastic looking car. The ultimate modern Alfa. If you can find someone to work on it or advise you then ought to buy it.
Orange and Yellow would have been cool in the 70's.

Re: Montreal!

Thanks all you guys out there.
My main worries are engine parts like gaskets, pistons and all the other ancillaries. I,m told that the chassis, transmission and suspension are basically based on the 105 series thats why its horrible handling quite different in a Bertone coupe and Giulia saloon due ti its front weight bias. The ZF gearbox also might cost some problems in terms of parts and finally is the SPICA Inezione system........but the idea of a compact Alfa V8 is irresistable,it sounded great when I drove it.My mechanic and friend is willing to brave it for me as long as I can get him the parts.

About details, does it make sense that a red car will have red seats and other black trim as i saw one in 'Alfista' mag from Japan. Also seen lime green with black interior which is quite normal, but what about ORANGE?
ORANGE seats???? As much as I love Alfas that I cant stomach! Then there is the small problem of getting the interior details right like console, switch gear and so on. It took me awhile to get the Giulia looking exactly like the sales brochure. Thats an idea!Annyone know where to find a Montreal brochure?

All said I really want it...if I get get the project done

Re: Montreal!

Big Man, ned some help from you here, seen some Montreals in the Japanese Alfista, Alfa & Romeo magazines. You know anything about how the Montreals are getting on in Japan?

Re: Montreal!

You really ought to spend some time looking at the website mentioned above by garwood1. It is the definitive site run by Bruce Taylor and also has a forum attached. You will be able to find out virtually everything you want to know from there. It was a great hep to me when I had my Montreal. Alfaowner is not really a fund of knowledge on Montreals. There aren't many of us on here who have first hand knowledge of them.

Re: Montreal!

Looking at these pics, it really is in fantastic condition, especially the engine bay. Chrome work and bodywork all look excellent. Wouldn't get too uptight about the interior trim, easily put right at an upholstery shop. 'Bound to be a few near you ! Very jealous....

Re: Montreal!

Whats wrong with the colour of the car? Great colour - suits it well.

Can't see the interior, but you could always have it retrimmed - black would probably be best, although tan may be good aswell.

I would get those head light shelter / fins colour coded though...

Awesome car.

Re: Montreal!

Thanks again all you guys for your comments. Feel a little more brave now and heading towards Penang after the weekend. Lookin' for trouble again I guess. The Giulia is getting new High Comp pistons and quarter race cams, due out in a month or so. Managed to buy them today.

I,ve finally decided on the colour scheme for the Montreal if I get it. Rosso with red leather for seats and doorcards matched with black trim and the chrome bits. My poor man's version of the 8C..........
