My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD - Autocar.co.uk

Just looking on Autocar and thought I'd do a quick search for the Alfa 156 and thought that looked familiar - it was my car!!

At some point red leathers been put into my car as the photo's show cloth seats(unless there were more than one car).

The other thing I just also checked is the spec/data on the autocar link. It says that it's got 150bhp and 225lb/ft rather than the 175bhp and 284lb/ft I thought they had. Do autocar do independant tests for bhp/torque or is that data they would have been given from Alfa uk?! What should the 2.JTDm have in terms of bhp/torque?!

Cheers,

Mark

Re: My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

It depends on what year the car was made that affects the power from the engine.

The 'review' talks about the car in the over-all sense, as in from '97-'06.

But, the model they tested was a late 2003 'face-lift' model that as far as I know has the 175BHP 20v 2.4JTD engine.

The earlier 2.4JTD engines might have had less power, I think the 10v version from around '01 only had 140BHP, I am not sure... Pud knows...

But, yours being a '53' plate will have the 175BHP engine in it.

Hope that helps

I'd have been surprised if 150 bhp in a relatively heavy saloon would hae got you to 60 in 7 and a half seconds. Autocar such valid reviews

I know the 1.9JTD Multijet engine has 150BHP as I have that, but, the 2.4JTD was 175 till it went in the 159 then it became 210 (also mine does 0-60 in 5 seconds)

I read that, they must have been gunning it the whole time!

Goto the 'how many miles to a tank' thread. My photo I took this morning proves how frugal the diesels are with fuel

Re: My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

Yeah, I noticed that as well.. The 2.4 20v JTDm definitely has 175bhp. Not sure about the torque, I thought it was 275lbft, with the 159 now having 295lbft..

Older 10v versions were 136bhp (-2001), 140bhp (2001-2002) and 150bhp (2002-2003).. The 140 & 150 engines were essentially the same, just were mapped differently from the factory. 136bhp version had a different turbo.

Tony - they had 10v and 20v accordingly, as the engine has 5 cylinders (and either 2 or 4 per cylinder). The 1.9 engine's are either 8v or 16v, as the 1.9 is a four cylinder with either 2 or 4 valves per cylinder.

Can't believe they only gave it 2/5 though, most of the review was positive, faster, better spec'd, cheaper than competition, all it needs is some better springs and dampers and maybe a strut brace or two and it handles as good as any Beemer or Audi..

Re: My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

I agree, I'm suprised it has only 2 stars as most of the review is positive. I think the handling is fairly good as standard, but it won't stop be putting in some Koni FSD shocks at some point.

They really must have been giving it a hard time to only get 17.3mpg, but I suppose if it's on track its going to be low. I can comfortably get 600miles from a tank commuting to work.

I'm supprised the 0-60 is 7.6seconds though, I wonder if Alfa 'tweaked' anything between the factory and the autocar test ground?!

Cheers,

Mark

0-60 of 7.6 sounds about right really..

Re: My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

Thats a 20 valve 156 thus 175bhp.

The 156 was getting on a bit by that time and the new 3 series had just arrived, thus it was a previous generation car hence the stars.

Plus the 156 2.4 always was a bit of heaving lump up front.

I know pud, I was just tired when I was typing the post and was thinking about my engine, thats why I typed 8v and 16v not 10v and 24v... oh well...

Re: My car was the autocar 156 2.4 JTDm test car

Mark_JTD. That 20v mjet RF53EHP of yours was mine for 4 years. I had the red leather put in when buying it off Caledonian in Warrington. Yes it was the fiat press car. i took it from 8k miles to over 94k miles but had lots of problems with the milometer software - it eventually had 4 and was zeroed each time, so when I sold it in Oct 07 it showed 49k on the clock although it had done 94k. Just want to make sure you know its history and that it has gone to good home.
