Petrol vs Diesel

Dear Alfisti.

I'm tossing up whether to go Diesel or Petrol on my next ALFA.

Heard some differing views about diesel - from sluggish performance to better mileage. Some people here in Australia say the 2.4 JTD is a great buy.

Any opinions and how do the two compare amongst the new range of Alfas?

Test drive them both - it's the only way you will get a decisive decision (if you know what I mean). This debate has been ragged to death on here many times over.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

As Fraser says, it's a very personal choice.

If it was me (and it will be next year), I'd be going for the 1.9Mjet diesel. It's a nice engine, but the main reason would the way the oil price/environmental taxes are going. The 1.9 is cheaper new and I fear for the running costs and retention values of the higher consumption engines a few years hence.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

I was very surprised by my diesel. I had always vowed never to drive a tractor. Wouldn't go back now.

But like the other guys say, it is very personal. Drive them both with an open mind!

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

As you live in Australia then it is definitely a different situation from that experienced by those living in the UK and Europe where Petrol cars are actively discouraged by the tax regimes.
Only you will know whether you can live with a diesel. For an econobox, I can live with a diesel...but not an Alfa Romeo....

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

Diesel in Australia is slightly more expensive than our premium unleaded (98 RON).

Around $1.50 ($Aus) for Premium
Diesel $1.60

* Sydney Prices

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

The thing that puts me off of a Diesel is the fact that the price gap between unleaded and diesel is likely to grow even bigger. So IMO there won't be much of a cost saving by going to Diesel in the long term.

You also have to factor in servicing costs and how much the car costs to buy etc... Before making a choice.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

The cars available in Australia. (Exchange rates A$1=0.60 Euro-0.48UK pounds)

http://www.alfaromeo.com.au/media/pd...Price_List.pdf
Alfa Romeo 159Alfa Romeo 159 JTS 2.2 litre 136 kW Manual $49,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 JTS 2.2 litre 136 kW Selespeed $51,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 JTD Diesel 1.9 litre 110 kW Manual $48,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 JTD Diesel 1.9 litre 110 kW Auto $51,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 JTD Diesel 2.4 litre 147 kW Manual $55,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 JTD Diesel 2.4 litre 147 kW Auto $58,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 V6 AWD 3.2 litre 191 kW Manual $74,990*
Alfa Romeo 159 V6 AWD 3.2 litre 191 kW Auto $77,990*

From what I can see from the specs http://www.alfaromeo.com.au/media/pdfs/159_specs.pdf there is not much difference between the (base) specs of the 1.9 JTD, the 2.2 JTS and the 2.4 JTD..

If the car is along distance tourer, then Diesel would be worth it. If the car is a city driver I would personally go for the petrol especially if you do not like the diesel rattle at idle

For me it's not the cost saving - it is bloody expensive however you look at it. I just like the torque across the range from the JTDMs - something happens when you boot it at whatever rpm in whatever gear.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel

I am firmly in the petrol camp. I prefer a nice smooth revving, tuneful petrol with a wide power band to a smelly diesel with 2000 rpm of pull and then nothing.

And then there is the clatter in the mornings..

I have a friend who owns a 2.4 20V, and he has taken me out in it. It was very good I will admit, but not my thing. He also said he only gets around 36mpg, which is not a lot more than I get from my Fiat (easy 30mpg if you are careful) on cheaper fuel. So I am not going to rush out and change for a while yet.
