Stealth Cameras....beware of tatty vans

Pictured: The 'workman's van' disguised by police to target motorists with a hidden speed camera | the Daily Mail

As I have a ''safe driving course'' pending and almost got caught again by a camera van last week, I should either be careful or slow down I guess

This van appears to be in the Peak District, probably on the Cat & Fiddle or Snake Pass I reckon.

I saw a battered orange daf with motorway maintenance stickers on the back near Norwich, it wasn't till you were on top of it that you saw the speed camera sign b*stards!!

Yeah a thing in the paper about this - totally against the guidelines

These stealth cams won't achieve anything.

They cannot be safety cameras because they do not slow you down. A marked camera makes you put on the brakes, thereby achieving it's aim. Slowing traffic down.

Therefore they can only be cash-cows.

Not seen any in Manchester but occasionally a white van sits on the parkway, in uniform @the back doors with a speed cam.

I was under the impression that they had to be clearly identified and visible fro a set distance.

I think that's just in the ACPO guidelines and I think that's just what they are - guidelines.

If not how does this apply to the ones operated from Motorway bridges where you have little chance of spotting them until far too late ? ( Not being contentious here, I really don't know the answer to this. )

Not sure will ask my brother in law what the regulations are regarding this.

Re: Stealth Cameras....beware of tatty vans

I was having a read of the comments and some people have put down the simple answer is not to speed!

So have a think back to any drive you have had in the last few days and the only time you were probably behind someone doing the speed limit was when you were behind a learner driver!

So is it more dangerous to be moving along with the traffic a little over the limit or indeed is it more dangerous the amount of people you see jumping red lights?

Most of the people I see doing this are female too, which seems odd given how much they love to moan about most things!

There is a road near me that is very long and straight with no hills or dips and it is a 30 limit, I have been using this road for the last 5 years twice a day to and from work. Now if I do 29mph down that road people overtake me the whole time, but if I do 36/37mph they dont, so which is safer?

I do believe that has got my back up lol !

Re: Stealth Cameras....beware of tatty vans

Couldnt agree more - road by me with at least 2 deaths a year has a 60 limit but is 30 at one end.

the number of people who miss the badly placed signs and carry on at 30 is amazing - majority of bumps result from people who know the road is a 60 limit and get frustrated and overtake.

It is a decent road with a few bends - the signs are on the opposite side to the direction of travel.

I would like to see the 60mph painted onto the floor as the 30mph sign is to ensure people speed up a little.

That blue van parks on the road between cromford and ashbourne.

Also, in north wales, Mr brunstrom has a speed camera operating from a trailer type horse box

Re: Stealth Cameras....beware of tatty vans

Someone wrote into the metro claiming this was all to do with safety. I just emailed them myelf with the following, I doubt it will get published but you never know

In response to the letter on Tuesday 6th May about speed cameras hidden in old, unmarked vans preventing speeding, I would love to know how that is so? If preventing speeding was the goal of this, and this was a dangerous road a more effective way would be to use a marked van. This would make speeding motorists/bikers slow down and become more aware of the dangers on that stretch of road upon seeing the camera. A clearly visible sign showing the number of accidents and fatalities on that stretch of road would also be more effective. Unmarked vans, and cameras are just another way of generating revenue from the motorist and nothing to do with safety.

I spotted a van today. It marked up in the striped livery, but was neatly hidden behind a bush.

I was visible, but you could only really tell what it was once it was too late. Unless of course you had binoculars.

There was one guy parked up next to the van arguing with the the person inside it when I went past..

Re: Stealth Cameras....beware of tatty vans

there is a section of the A19 that is down to 50mph for roadworks. on saturday moring at 9.30am i was doing 80mph because the road was empty and there were no roadworks in progress (bank holiday weekend). suddenly i see a police van on a flyover with a camera sticking out the window pointing at me. bugger

i'll probably get 6 points. what a disgrace.
