Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

.....so I have to attend a Speed Awareness Course.

This is at a cost of £80, rather than copping a 3 points penalty and a £60 fine.

Anyone else been on one? I have selected the course option in order to avoid any more points on my licence. Apparently it lasts four hours and tea and coffee are provided. But no butties.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of fixed cameras (ie Licence to print money versus valuable road safety tool) I guess it was a fair cop, 39 MPH through a 30 MPH. I just didn't see it, my fault.

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

My boss just came back off of one. He said it was actually pretty good and he learned a few things. He said it was a bit like one of those red letter day events!

Definitely the better option than getting the points - although I think he said you can only take this option once in 5 years

I went on one earlier this year. Pretty boring really but quite informative. not too much lecturing! better than 3 point but i won't get the option again if i get caught within 3 years. so if you are having to drive round me in the Limehouse Link you know why!!

Been very lucky in this department, although very carefull (touching wood again ) Never speed through residential areas and towns, just the odd blast up the motorway around 2am and on quiet country roads.Having said that i now know that the 2.0T.Spark CAN reach 140mph and out run an Audi 1.8 Turbo

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

Just been reading up on this. You can only be offered the course if you are doing less than 10% of the limit +6MPH.

ie my 39 MPH was the maximum. Any more and I would have just been offered the points and fine.

The course are aimed at those breaking the limit by a small amount mainly in residential areas

did you have to watch the nasty crash vids?

did you fall asleep?

Not attended yet, it's in July.

I expect a few videos of flattened badgers, followed by the one of Clarkson driving an Alpine A310 into a wall

Seriously, I am intruiged to see what it's all about.

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

Lucky get!

I'd rather pay out and save the points too.

Just give it plenty of "Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full sir" and walk out whistling to yourself that you've saved 3 points. And try not to s****** at the crash vids like a naughty school kid.

Edit: Oh noes, looks like the word beginning with s, for a childish laugh through the nose when you're being told off gets picked up by the swear filter for the racist ending to it!

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

i've done the course.coupla hours doing interactive questions and threat and accident awareness on the computer, then a discussion with a senior police instructor.it was more informative than i thought it would be.

the message they tried to get across is to change down to 3rd gear in a 30 limit.i've been doing this for a coupla months now and it works.

i got done for a 35 in a 30.

80 quid lighter but my licence is still un blemished

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

It's terrible how you get offered this course in some areas and not others. I got caught doing 38 in a 30 in Liverpool and there is no course there so had to have the 3 points (my first offence ever). The governments inconsitency strikes again W**kers!

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

Surely changing down to 3rd for 30 limits is bad for the planet & that? I just stick cruise on of it's one of those silly roads that shouldn't be a 30/40.

Any speed cameras I go past I do the same as Bri & stick the cruise control on. Haven't managed to get a point yet thankfully.

Re: Speeding..I've been a naughty lad.

Cruise control's a licence saver through those speed averaging cameras. Gone through them too many times, looked down and I've been over the limit and by the time I realised I've got no idea how long I was over the limit and how long to slow down for to get the average back down. Now when I see the telltale 3 cameras on a lampost the cruise goes on.

Yeah I read that about changing into third gear. You're right it doesn't seem too good for the emisions does it?

Occasionally I use CC on the motorway through a 40 mph temporary limit, other that that I find it pretty useless

No i guess it isn't, but it's not as if you'll be driving in third for any great distance.
