To Turbo or not to Turbo

I'd be grateful for opinions on this one. I like the 2.2 four cylinder engine in my Brera - ok not the most powerful of units and I would like a bit better economy. However, the one thing I like about it is that it is a non-turbo engine with a reasonable cubic capacity. I have had turbo engines in the past including a diesel GT, Golf GTI's and BMW diesel turbo's. I have had instances of turbo's going on a Golf GTI and diesel BMW 320 d - both very expensive episodes and something I would always be mindful of when buying a turbo'd car.

Do you think Alfa would have been better placed refining the 2.2 be it a remap or whatever, or do you agree that smaller capacity and turbocharging is the way to go. Perhaps they have no choice be interested to hear opinions.

Other than due to design faults, theres no reason why a turbo should just go if it has been properly serviced. I know the BMW 320D had problems with oil feeds or something though..

I think its the only way they can go, to keep up with the pack on emissions and economy. Mapping can help keep the power delivery as linear as possible..

in the future there will be more small capacity engines with turbos, fiat already have the t-jet and plan to have more turbos in the range soon. twin turbos with one small and one large are the future, no lag! & boost from 1000rpm. fiat plan to release the twin turbo 1.4t-jet.

the golden rule is forced induction is not a good alternative to capacity. personally i agree with this rule, but i do see the advantages of turbos, especially with EU regulations that we expect will only get more strict in time.
