Yeah it's cool and all but I don't like the rear light clusters and the retro styling thing isn't really my thing. For looks alone, I think I'd actually prefer a (Brera) Spider!

Re: Beautiful Alfa 8C Spider

AR need the cashflow if they want to improve, £120k per car must be giving better margins than selling half a dozen 159's. besides, if a car is selling its rude not to make it, and in the past it has been repeatedly proven that very limited supply doesnt push the price up significantly, so imo they could make 10 times as many 8C's and still sell for the same price easily enough.

similarly there should have been many more RZ's and SZ's, and they should have been sold outside of italy.

plus, if there are many more of them on the market then i have a better chance of owning one in the future, or at least seeing one on the road. AR's are so rare i'd be over the moon to see a brera or even a 159.

Not so sure about the margins - I doubt it's a cheap car to make, plus I understand the tooling to make the CF bodies doesn't last long so building a higher volume would need even more investment.

And limited volumes might not push the price up, but it pushes the desirability up and protects the value long term. Ferrari has a history of it. Rolex depends on it, which is why people queue up to pay over the odds for a not-really-that-special Daytona. (No, I'm not making a link between Ferrari Daytona and a Rolex Daytona. )

If they built as many as they could sell, you might find they couldn't sell them all. If you see what I mean.

Off-topic, but SZs and RZs were sold outside of Italy - SZs were even sold into the UK, you just had to ask your dealer. And save up enough, same as the 8C.

Re: Beautiful Alfa 8C Spider

I'm not sure it's clear that Alfa actually make any money out of the 8C. It is a showpiece exercise designed to raise the brand profile. It's development costs were actually paid for from the Brera marketing budget in the hope it would bring customers into the showroom.

VW-Audi do the same thing, albeit on a much larger scale, with the Bugatti Veyron which costs twice as much to build as it's showroom price.

I'm really glad Alfa went ahead as it's fabulous bit of kit and appears to have instilled a much needed boost of confidence in the Alfa/FIAT boardroom.

I don't care that I can't afford it - I can't afford tons of cars, it doesn't make them any less desirable.

Re: Beautiful Alfa 8C Spider

the 8C was originally a project to improve overall brand image rather than sell for a profit, but that was when they were planning to sell for under E100k (£50k). since they more than doubled the price when it was finally put on sale i took that as a sign it was now a 'for profit' model and i hoped that would mean it was going into full production and would be made according to demand (since they can afford to make more if they arent losing money on it)

Re: Beautiful Alfa 8C Spider

Er, 100,000 Euros is actually around £70,000 but I won't quibble with the sentiment.

A 500 car run on each model is a very short production run but they must have decided upon this for very good reasons. After all, even Alfa likes to make money.

In any event, as I say, I'm glad they built the thing and din't just leave it to languish as a concept. I still ache for the Nuvola which they really should have put into production.

Well done Alfa for having the bottle to give us both a dream car in
the 8C and a fabulous mainstream model with the Brera and Spider.

When / where was it going to be under £50k?

When I first inquired about it (the coupe, anyway) in 2003 the dealer I spoke to was projecting around £70k. A quick look through some old magazines has Auto Italia also quoting £70k and Car saying around £83k. So in real terms it's a bit more expensive, but not massively - remember that's £83k five years ago.

I'm with Will - it's just great that they made it.

that is a typo (as spotted by Will) it should be £70k. most mag reports stated E100k would be the retail price, i think that figure came directly from AR and triggered a lot of the hype. personally i think they were scared to price it above the carrera4 to begin with, for fear of the reviews saying "get a carrera4 instead".
