Caught Speeding :(

Unfortunately last week I was caught doing 40mph in a 30mph zone (dual carriageway leading to a 50 zone).

I'm not looking for sympathy, i know i was in the wrong, and am guilty of this.

I have received a notification of pending prosecution, and i have now signed and returned this today.

What sort of penalty am i looking at receiving? The camera was a gatso type. I've been told a 60 fine, and 3 points - is this correct?

Lastly i'm not looking at ways of 'getting off', i know i've done something wrong and will take the flak - just wondering how bad it could be?

Thanks

Re: Caught Speeding :(

Before this degenerates ladies and gents, please think about your answers. A similar thread like this turned a bit unsavoury recently.

Don't have a go at the man or try and suggest ways of getting out of it, as he has said. Just answer the questions asked please.

Thanks.

It's most likely a 3 pointer and a £60 buddy.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

I do feel some sympathy with AndyRigby, It is not always obvious where a particular speed limit starts and ends, and camera's are often placed to take advantage of this, then there is the fact you may actually be concentrating on where you are going, and not the speedo.

It all depends on the circumstances though.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

Andy, almost exactly the same thing happened to me: (I was doing 35 in a 40) £60 fine, 3 points on my licence.

Don't bother with a way out...take the flak...I got over it, so will you

Re: Caught Speeding :(

if it's a first speeding offence don't you get the option of taking some driver training? Costs a bit more than the £60 fine, but at least you don't get the points on your license

Re: Caught Speeding :(

As OA points out, similar threads have been closed as AO can't be seen to condone speeding

However, depending on where you got caught, you may get offered "speed school" (Northants do this) which costs c120 and gives you no points or you max just get the conditional offer of a fixed penalty, 3 points & a 60 fine. Whatever, ask for a photo as at least you get a nice pic of your Alfa for the money

Just a slant on the subject....

Currently with our current technology and understanding Speed does not Kill

Slowing does..

Re: Caught Speeding :(

Yeah i'm a little disappointed with the area the van was parked. It was following a large junction on a dual carriage way. Only factories on one side of the road etc. Top of the hill is the 50mph sign then the motorway sliproad. If i was caught doing this through a housing estate i would be very sorry. But I feel at the point i was caught they were just cashing in. Oh well.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

I got caught doing 42 in a 30 and was fined £60 and 3 points.

I swore blind that there was no van anywhere near where I was caught.

A few weeks later I was travelling a mates car and saw the guy hiding in amoung the parked cars - I thought that they had to be visible from 100mts.

But hey hey ho - pay the fine and take the hit, its not worth the paper trying to fight it.

We have a similar thing close to me where you come off a clearway which has a speed limit of 40 with a camera positioned 500yds from a round about, as you exit the round about onto a dual carrigeway 200yds down they will be sat in their van.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

To answer the question: you'll be looking at £60 and 3 points.

How they can justify the camera placement where you described for safety I don't know. It's obviously to generate revenue. Personally I'd fight everything. If you can get off legally, then what's the harm.

Don't. The RA is way superior. In plus form it's cordless too

Also, Talex have gone belly up so there's subcription / update issues there too

Re: Caught Speeding :(

I was offered 'speed school' which cost me 72 and no points. But if it happens again within 3 years i won't get the option but to take the fine & points.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

Sorry to hear about you getting caught. It could probably happen to any one of us.
As for the RA, what are they like for mobile cameras & "hairdryer" style guns? From what I've read, there is very little protection against them, as the reaction time available from the time the RA picks up the signal is minimal.
If you have a clean licence so far, just having 3 points on it doesn't hurt too much, & your insurance co need to be told, but they probably won't raise the premium. However, if you already have 3 or more points, doing the speeding course & avoiding adding points is a good idea.
A mate of mine recently got caught doing 120+mph in his merc 320 diesel estate on the M11, despite having a camera detector of some sort in his car. He'd stopped off at Tesco on the way home & when he returned to his car, the cops were standing by his car! As he needs his car for work, he opted to take a £2k fine, rather than a ban.
Matt.

Re: Caught Speeding :(

The RA+'s will do laser but as you say, if you've been painted it's usually too late although most rozzers will take two readings so at least you can deploy the chutes They will also pick up laser scatter from other targetted cars.

The units now incorporate all know mobile sites and mine very rarely gets it wrong (although it does tell you where every possible camera / van is, live / there or not)

Updates can be daily too......

I sailed under a van on a bridge on the M5 at 95 yesterday I'm expecting the letter any time now. How fast do you need to be over before you get six points?

Re: Caught Speeding :(

Vans on bridges are a bit odf an issue as the camera has to be specially calibrated to take into account the height. Some times they are just VED cameras looking at tax discs. This looks like a useful site Speeding Offences - FAQ - Speeding Ban, Speeding Disqualification Its unusual to get a ban for speeds under 100mph on the motorway.

Good luck!

Done the crime, pay the fine - £60 + 3 points is to be expected.

If you promise to be a good boy in the future I can possibly help - Send me a PM.

I got 4 points for doing 97.

Depends on the road conditions, traffic, road etc. I wrote a nice letter pointing out that it was a very clear day with next to no traffic, which was evident in the photo. The Police Officer had put in his statement that the road was busy, which learly it wasn't. Each case is different though.

A few years ago I got caught doing 38 in a 30, and went on a course and paid about 80 fine. Everyone on the course had done 38 in a 30.

These days I stick to the speed limits (apart from maybe an itsy bit quicker on MWays), and life is good.
