Flying bricks.....

Something hit my windscreen very hard yesterday. My eyes must have seen whatever it was as I ducked before impact.

Now, right bang slap in the middle of my line of sight is a chip the size of a 20p piece and thousands of tiny chips elsewhere on the screen and orange dust all over the roof.

Just rang my insurance company who put me through to RAC Auto Windscreens, who have agreed to install a genuine Alfa Romeo windscreen in it's place, no extra cost to me!

Question is though (as an appointment has yet to be made on Monday), if at all possible, should I make the 20 mile trip to the depot, or have it installed at home?

I'd go to them, then if there's any problems they have everything to hand.

As an ex-windscreen fitter i would agree with alfa man, i used to do the majority of windscreens at customers homes but not when its raining!
Take it to them and it will be fitted in the dry. Also check the bodywork around the screen when they have done the job, some windcreen fitters are quite rough with there tools

Re: Flying bricks.....

Go to them, also bring with you a bit of sandpaper, some primer, some touch up paint, rust-dissolvers stuff, and make sure you sort out any rust thats on the leading edge of the roof panel as its the best time to do it.

Re: Flying bricks.....

I thought so! I'll see if I can go to them then. Was thinking of taking pictures before they changed the screen just in case any damage were to happen.

Re: Flying bricks.....

How feckin useless can one company be? RAC Autowindscreens rang me this morning, and told me they would be coming out tomorrow at 13:00.

No more than 2 minutes later my phone rings again... Different number...

"Hello, It's RAC Autowindscreens, when would you like us to come out?"

When I told him someone had just rang and made an appointment, he basically branded me a liar and questioned whether I had called another company such as Autoglass - "It must have been them that rang."

"Umm, no, it was RAC mate!"

So anyway, I give him the number that rang previously- "Oh, that's another branch" (Yes... well done ) "Dunno why they've got the job, we are closer, I'll ring them and get the job changed to us and give you a call back."

3 Hours later and I've heard nothing. So I ring them back.
"Oh yeah mate, the other branch are gonna do it, bye." Arrogant RS!

Had a quick think, hang on a minute, I can't believe they have an original Alfa screen in stock, so I rang them back.

"Oh no mate, nothing here about an original screen. Anyway, you'll have to pay for it if you don't want a pattern one. We've got a deal with your insurance company" To which I replied "Well, when I rang on Saturday, this wasn't a problem so I suggest you speak to my insurance company about it."

Got off the phone to them and rang Admiral insurance. "Of course sir, you want genuine parts on your beautiful car." (Actual words too ) "No problem, we'll ring RAC and get them to order you one in."

5 minutes later, Admiral rang back and said "We have confirmed with RAC that you are to have an original Alfa Romeo windscreen, with just your normal excess to pay. They will call you within the next few minutes to arrange an appointment."

4 HOURS later, they did. Claiming they had contacted Admiral!

I just hope they are better at fitting than organising.

I won't be driving to the workshop now, as the screen cracked this morning and is creaking a hell of a lot and wouldn't trust it to make the journey, so they are coming to me on Monday!

Re: Flying bricks.....

I hope the actual experience of having the screen fitted is a lot better than the hassle you had to deal with on the phone... All the best!

Re: Flying bricks.....

I had a pattern screen for my GTV fitted by the RAC at home. No problems with it at all.

24 hours later another bloody stone chip (not big enough to warrant replacement) ........grrrrrrrr.

Re: Flying bricks.....

Glad to see you got them sorted out and they are giving you an authentic part, hope they are better organised when they come out to see you than they have been at organising themselves!

I have a minor stone hit me and chip the front wiondscreen whilst on the motorway last month, frightened the bejesus out of me thought my wind screen was gonna come in, can't imagine what a brick would be like.

All the best
