Expensive month...

...and we still don't know quite how expensive.

Anyone who's been following the GTA rust thread will know that my car is going in two have two bits of warranty paintwork done. Unfortunately there are also two bits which I'll have to pay for myself.
A jacking point cover needs respraying
A scuff on the front bumper
Dunno how much they'll cost.

Jenny's car has just failed it's MOT, one of the points was both front springs have snapped. Dunno how much that's going to cost either.

Unfortunately, the bits that I do know how much they'll cost are:

Service for my car 520.
Sill needs replacing and spraying to match on Jenny's car 340
(Maybe rust is contagious, apparently the sill is a mess, and it's only Y reg.)

So that's 860 + replace springs + respray bumper scuff and jacking point cover.

+ the possibility that the springs have been caused by something else + the possibility that there's anything wrong on mine the service will find (I know the rear pads are low)

Still. as I keep pointing out to Jenny, I'd rather have a GTA which is costing me 500 than a Corsa which is costing her 300

Re: Expensive month...

Is the car with the broken springs a Vauxhaul? I don't think its an uncommon problem with some of their models to be honest.

Spot on. And rust isn't uncommon for them either from what I know.

Re: Expensive month...

yeah the sills are a problem area on corsa's. my old gsi wasnt to bad but having skirts it may have helped shield the actual sill. two snapped springs though thats really bad! what was it like to drive?

Re: Expensive month...

My mum's Corsa had two snapped springs, I drove around in it for 6 months since the first one broke and about 4 months since the second one broke, felt fine (well, as fine as a corsa can get)

Re: Expensive month...

Bazza matey, if it's any comfort...my Polo has rust toward the end of the lower sill, large rust patches on the lower rear edges of the front doors, paint bubbling badly around the rear side-glass windows, and rust forming ahead of the windscreen rail - in fairness, this might be stone-chip related. This is a ten year old Vee-dub. But if you look at a 15/20 year old Mk2 Golf, they don't rust - ever!

Maybe it's my fault - in the last year, my Polo seems to have aged quite a bit cosmetically with respect to the rust (this might be because it has only been washed twice). I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it, though :-)

Re: Expensive month...

Well, all the Corsa costs have now been paid. Just under £1100 altogether (2x springs, 2 x dampers, new sill and respray, road tax, MOT and Insurance)
I can only imagine the Alfa will come in more expensive to show who's boss

Re: Expensive month...

Get to Mangoletsi, Nigel comes outside so I can show him the paint issues, first thing he says?
"Your foglights broken."

Balls
The omens are terrible for it costing a bundle I reckon. If you're reading this Nigel try and keep it reasonable!

So they'll be ringing me once they've priced up the paintwork and foglight, but aside from that they're doing everything over the next week so I can pick up a week tomorrow.

Re: Expensive month...

Well I pick her up tomorrow after work. No idea yet of the price though. They rang me to say she was ready at about 6:30am New York time so I was a bit too bleary eyed to remember to ask the relevant questions.

Re: Expensive month...

I have just rung Mangoletsi to check that my car was ready, and what the cost was, and have found out something a little unfortunate:
They forgot to do the service.

Not to worry though, they are going to do it and have it ready for tomorrow afternoon. I can easily see how it happened - with the car being sent away for the paintwork when they got it back they just assumed it was ready for the customer.

On the upside, Paul gave me the price for the paintwork they've done - £94. that's excellent, and cheaper than I'd expect had a SMART repairer done it. I can only assume they have been able to do it so cheaply because they were doing the warrantee work at the same time, and I think it's very fair of them to pass that saving on to me.
So I've just got the £520 for the service, and whatever a foglight costs to continue to worry about I think, as long as they don't find anything further.
