Cry Like A Baby I have a problem with 156's....

Or more particularly the new owners....

Let me say to start that I have always been a fan of the 156. When it came out first I thought it was gorgeous, and still think a well maintained 156 it is one of the best looking saloon cars on the road.

The problem is that so many were sold and now they have drifted onto the second or third hand market, and now people who should not be allowed to drive an Alfa have them.

Now you see loads of shabby, dented, ill-maintained 156's being driven around by knuckle-draggers, with inappropriate bits stuck on all over them, weird paint jobs and ghastly additions...

Today was the last straw, on my way to work a cruelly treated 156 drove past me with huge fluffy dice hanging from the mirror. I mean, FFS....!

I like the exclusivity of Alfa ownership, and this kind of thing just cheapens the brand! At least I have never seen my beloved GTV or Spider being treated like this, although I am sure some of you are going to post some links to some barbaric crimes that have been committed to them too!

Is it just me..... ?

'76 Spider -> '93 164 -> '99 146 Junior -> '97 GTV -> '99 Spider....

I'm sure this happens with all marques.

There is some poor guy with his 50K M3 driving along when he is overtaken by some chav in a 10 year old M3 he bought for 6K - giving BM drivers the same bad name.

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

That is one big downside of when any good car become popular, as they get cheaper they fall into the wrong hands.

This has happened to some degree to Fiat Coupes, and before those it was Vauxhall Calibra's, Ford Capri's etc.

The cars image gets dragged down, even though there is nothing wrong with the cars itself.

Or the other way round...

Just as likely.

Well my GTV us dented, I can't afford to get it fixed yet, but have every intention to. Hope people don't think I don't care about my car, it's just due to a lack of funds!

True but there are still people who drive BM's and have a modicum of respect for other road users - not many but a few.

the cars do certainly suffer the most from poor image - especially as a lot 318's end up with body kits / big wheels and "M" badging.

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

Plenty of Porsches outside council houses here...not all of them old and tatty.

If you want to to see tatty Alfas..just go to Italy for a start.

Sorry , I'm not into car snobbery (just as well with a Kia and a Skoda on the drive). I've had a few good chats with chav Alfa owners and they are just as keen in their own way, and glad to get the lowdown on maintainance issues.

I also don't give a toss what other people think of my car. Its for me, I enjoy it, end of story.

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

you can easily pick up a nice 98/99 156 for a grand these days so they are bound to get bought by some people who dont give a toss and just want an A2B car. i dont mind, it just makes mine look so much better in comparison.

Amusing little side panel in the new Top Gear mag (page 146) saying why the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6 weren't being included in the Jag XF group test with the Merc CLS500 and Lexus GS460. It says that basically that the BM and Audi are excellent cars, but are the boring choice and lack passion. It says of their drivers, "...we've been hassled for too many years on motorways [by] hard-chinned, sharp-faced, self-obsessed and inconsiderate tailgating bas***ds virtually ramming us out of the way."

Apparently Hammond and May "have a theory that a great many hard-chinned, sharp-faced, self-obsessed and inconsiderate tailgating bas***ds have migrated across to Audi [from BMW] in order to avoid being found out for what they are. Maybe that's true, maybe not, but the same sort of 'I'm better than you, get out of the way' image applies to the Ingolstadt car."

Made me laugh anyway.

I agree with that - Audi drivers are just as bad as BMW drivers these days, just less conspicuous.

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

saab drivers arent included. there is a big difference between delusion and arrogance.

audi drivers are defo BMW wannabes. audi should put their prices up, it would probably increase sales.

This is a coincidence but yesterday I saw a hoody (booyakka sha) driving a 156 whilst on his mobile phone and never using his indicator. I felt very sorry for that car

You should have made a citizen's arrest and re-homed that car! Sort of like the RSPCA - Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Alfas!

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

even alfa themselves are responsible for plastering crap all over the 156, skirts, big spoilers and the suchlike so its not just chavs who ruin 156's. the 156 in original un skirted unspoilered quise is still one of the best looking saloons on the road, a great bit of design, why put ugly spoilers and skirts on it

i went to see some friends near gatwick the other day, parked on their drive and next door had a lovely silver 2.5 156 with nice alfa alloys, then i saw the big spoiler what a shame.

i prefer my cars without spoilers and skirts, how dare i, i must buy a chav spoiler imediately.

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

jabber, you're always pretty vocal about skirts/spoilers etc..

Calling skirts/spoilers 'crap' and 'ugly' is bound to wind up those of them who have them. I wouldn't have a 166 cause I think they look ugly, but I don't go shouting it about everytime someone mentions they've seen one.. We all have different tastes, your's isn't superior to mine, mine isn't superior to yours, just different. Chill

...a spoiler on a GTV for instance is essential in my opinion and I am from from a chav...apart from my trainer collection

Re: I have a problem with 156's....

I like the spoilers and skirts on the 156, but it looks wrong if the car has small wheels, a spolier and no skirts.

A 156 with no skirts, and skinny steel wheels looks wrong as well IMO. There are a few like this around.
