Need a new geabox for my 147, HELP

So i've been to three garages now, all took it out for a spin and said i need a new gearbox. One said he'll do it, it'll take 4 days for anything upto £1000, and another said he recomends i get a 2nd hand rebuilt gearbox from somewhere, and they'll put it in for me.

I've also been told not getting the cluch done at the same time would be stupid, it's done 40,000 miles so will probably need one soon anyway right ?

Does anyone know where i can get rebuilt boxes from ? or new ones ? or any prices ?

cheers

Ouch, I know this pain well.

You could ask this guy C. W. Lear - Independent Alfa Romeo specialists - Home page if it's something he can help with as he has most of my old 1.6 gearbox and may be able to help with a cheap refurb'd or second hand box at least that someone else can fit.

Good luck mate.

scrapyards and breakers. i usually pay £70 for a gearbox, but due to the availability of the 1.6 box it will probably cost the same as a JTD box, so expect £100. that should include a 28day warranty. get on the phone, if you ring the 50 closest places you're bound to find one.

I do find it funny when you keep telling people about these magic scrapyards and breakers where you can buy gearboxes for £70 and TS engines for £150, if there were such a place we would buy them all. Realistically you are going to have to pay at least £300 and about the same to fit it and wile you are there it is a good idea to change the clutch.

i was a self employed mechanic for over 4 years. i've bought more gearboxes and engines than most people will ever buy cars. i know what things should cost, and this is always what i try to provide as a guide price. i have nothing to gain from posting prices that are unrealistic.

you say £300 for fitting, in your experience that is what you pay, but i can guarantee 100% that it only costs £100 at my local garage for any gearbox on any car. i dont know why you pay so much more, dont blame me. it would be cheaper for you to drive to where i live, stay in a hotel, and then drive home instead of paying £300.
