Just crashed my car and I wasn't even in it

I could cry I just came out of my house to find my Alfa had rolled down the drive and crashed into my neighbours wall.

Damaged the rear 1/4 panel, rear bumper and looks like the rear suspension is damaged as the wheel is pointing at a funny angle.

I guess that will teach me for not leaving it in gear.

There goes 3 years no claims and £350 excess and now I will have to run around in a Ford Fester for a couple of weeks.

My guess is that the brake disc cooled down and contracted, meaning there was less handbrake than when it was applied.

Gutted for you

Sorry to hear/see this - you must be gutted. My old 156 rolled down our drive a couple of years ago. Thankfully it had a soft landing in the garage door! I've left my cars in gear when parked ever since then.

There was an another article on Watchdog this week about Vauxhalls with slipping handbrakes......

Good luck getting it fixed.

Terrible, feel for you mate. All too common at the moment, there was the Vauxhall Watchdog article on TV as mentioned. Also known problems with the new Civic, with a fix not available until April/May, but at least HUK are recognising and fixing it.

Re: Just crashed my car and I wasn't even in it

Can't claim off Alfa, as it does not have Alfa pads in. As PUD says I guess the disK cooled down and it let go - probably didn't help on my drive back home had to drive through a couple of floods and everything was drenched. Could have been worse, I live on a main road and I dread to think what might have happened if it had run into the road.

Looking at the car from the front the whole shell seems twisted - hopefully not a write off. Anyway local bodyshop coming to collect it Monday and luckily my insurance company insist it goes to the best bodyshop in the area, so at least when I get it back it will be as good as new.

Claim against your neighbour for putting his wall in the path of your car.

What a shame - Have you not got protected no claims? I always pay the small premium to have this on my cover.

Re: Just crashed my car and I wasn't even in it

Couldn't get the insurance protected due to the fact I keep crashing cars (the last crash I paid cash for to keep the no claims, but this looks expensive). The ironic thing this time was I was in the house at the time.

Bad news that...

Why not forget about the hand brake when you're not in the car & use reverse instead - that's what I got used to. Never freezes up either ... But that's all hindsight.

Good to see you've not lost your sense of humour. I don't think I can claim - especially as I am not going to tell them it was me that bashed their wall. The car is hidden in my garage and when the bodyshop pick it up they will be at work. Does this make me a bad neighbour?

Re: Just crashed my car and I wasn't even in it

My handbrake also sometimes releases on its own, but it only seems to happen in cold weather. The lever just slips off, it may be the release button not engaging on the quadrant. So she stays in gear.

It seems to help if I raise the lever with the button pushed in, hold it fully raised for a couple of seconds with the button in, then let the button go a further couple of seconds before releasing the lever. Don't always remember, hence the in gear bit.

Are Alfa aware?

- I hope you're joking? That would make you an awfully bad neighbour!

Sorry to hear about this, I can sympathise completely, just think yourself lucky you weren't chasing it down the road and saw it happen, that's worse

The handbrake doesn't work on the disc does it?
Its an internal drum inside the rear hub on most cars, like a miniature drum brake, unless alfa use a different design?

Sorry to hear of your accident fella, thats a real pain in the hole, such a nice car

Deeply sympathise. That terrible sick feeling takes some beating. Hope it's back to its beautiful normality soon.

What a shame. Poor you!

I still leave the car in gear - can't get use to trusting the handbrake....too many old, duff cars in my repetoire!
