Can anyone get any lower than my 1.9JTD mpg ???

Well i'm horrified to report that my last mpg from £40 of diesel was an appalling 30mpg

OK my driving isn't ideal, only a 5mile commute to work and a few short town journeys <2miles but even so this figure is pants.

The performance on my car has been really lumpy of late, especially under 2K revs so i'm wondering if the problem is affecting economy.

Even for 'bad' driving i'd expect 36-38mpg in a diesel...am i expecting too much here ?

Don't trust your fuel computer reading either....mine says it's 35.9mpg average for the same £40 of petrol....

The way it's going i'll be getting worse economy than my old RX8 at this rate

Re: Can anyone get any lower than my 1.9JTD mpg ???

I usually drive a 1.6 145, I average abut 32 MPG on this. Bella is off the road now (some **** drive into it. Im driving a diesel citreon c4 picasso at the mo (courtesy car). I find that when driven hard it drinks far more than the Alfa, however at a steady cruise it can return about 50MPG.

What im trying to say is that diesels seem to vary their fuel consumption quite considerably depending on how they are driven.

Afraid I cant offer any advice specific to your car, hopefully others can.

Re: Can anyone get any lower than my 1.9JTD mpg ???

I had a similar problem - where I had more fuel used than what the trip said....

It was not until a few days later that I noticed fuel..on the floor of the carpark at work...I turned the engine on and looked under the car and sure enough the car was spraying petrol underneath the car....not a massive amount...

I took it to a local tyre fitter that put it on a ramp and found that one of the fuel hoses had come loose (speedy fit type connector) from a connector junction that is covered up by a protective cover....he cleaned up the pipes and reconnected it up and it sorted it....

So just a thought....

Is it a new car? If so you won't get anywhere near the stated consumption until you are a few thousand miles in... The engine will be a bit tight at first!!

You'll never get that bad...

That MPG does sound a little low, but I don't think you'll get much better seeing how short your journeys are...

Re: Can anyone get any lower than my 1.9JTD mpg ???

sounds too low, I remember back when I couldn't get more than 500 from a tank on a similar short commute when it was cold, I still managed 480-500 miles to a tank though which is 36-38mpg. (on about 59 litre fill up)

Course these days you are getting less for your £40 than say the last month or two (10p a litre chnage in that time here) , have you correctly measured the amount going in or assumed the number of litres for your money based on previous?

Wouldn't like to think about owning something like the RX8 these days, not on my mileage, my GTA was bad enough at 23mpg, I get 90% farther for 5% extra fuel cost, nice

Don't know what might cause that on a JTD unless you are constantly on the throttle but I haven't managed to get a tank down to 30mpg even after doing hundred or so track miles.

My 156 does anything between 33-38mpg. 30 is really trying!

oi Cheeky boy - £40 / £1.07 = 37.4 litres x .22 = 8.22gallons

250miles achieved / 8.22 gallons = 30.4mpg !! = OUCH !

Car is 18mnths old and approaching 10k miles so not really new.

I'll monitor the next batch but it needs to be nearer 35mpg especially with the increased (in line with the bullsh!t 2% inflation rate) fuel costs

500 miles a month and you're concerned about running costs enough to have bought a diesel was buying a diesel a shock reaction to the pain of owning an RX8 as I like my GT, its nice to drive and quick etc. but at that mileage mine would be gone.

That's pretty shocking. My 2.2 JTS petrol Brera averaged 23mpgs between miles 3000 and 6000. I'd say something's wrong with your car.

Re: Can anyone get any lower than my 1.9JTD mpg ???

I've done 5000 miles so far - a motorway run returns 40mpg but the 8 mile run to work and general short trips around town results in 34. I'm hoping that other comments that it will improve are right because I am very easy on the loud pedal and would hate to think it could be worse if I pressed on a bit!

The cold weather will affect consumption drastically, the cold start, A/C, lights, wipers; in fact anything electrical.

I changed to fully synthetic oil after mine had run in because of the short journeys to work, this made a significant difference, not only to the consumption but to the running.

Mine is still doing approx 45 mpg regardless of how and where I drive.

That's impressive - again have you checked those figures are correct. What prompted you to change to fully synth oil ?.....might give that a go.

My RX7 uses a lot less oil than quite a few twin sparks
