An interesting discovery.

For the last two weeks the engine management warning light on my GTV has been on. The problem is the water temperature sender and this is on order - gets replaced tomorrow.

One effect of this means that the radiator fan runs all of the time whilst the engine is running. As well as overcooling I am a bit wary of the fan motor failing as it is not designed to run permanently - so I disconnected it.

The discovery - in heavy traffic, traffic jams etc it is possible to regulate the engine temperature by turning the heater and heater fan on full. What really surprised me was how effective this is - the temp never went above about 70 (needle mid way between 50 and 90). I am sure we all knew that this was worth doing but I never knew it would be so efficient.

Worth remembering if ever your fan fails.

Paul.

Pretty standard thing to do if your temp gauge goes mad when stuck in traffic

Yep! the scaled down, not the same area though, matrix, for the heating system works well as a mini radiator.: Not to be risked for long periods in the warmer months though. Hope you get her fixed soon mate.:

For sure - what surprised me was that, at one point, I was in a slow moving queue for 30 minutes and the gauge stayed constant throughout. I had expected the temp to very slowly creep up - as has been said the surface area of the heater matrix is somewhat smaller than that of the radiator. (It did cook my feet though)

Not to bad in this weather - not very clever come mid summer at least I can take the roof down.
