8C does not use an old Maserati chassis!!!

Maybe somebody on here has already pointed this out but contrary to what the UK magazines keep saying the 8C does not use the chassis from the Maserati Coupe/Gransport. It's a purpose built chassis that only the 8C uses. This is just lazy, misinformed journalism on the part of the British journalists(I've read it in a few magazines) and does no credit to this great car.

I think the chassis is the same, though shortened. Plus, the 8C is actually built by Maserati in their Modena factory.

Yes, I read that as well - in the feature article in the last AROC magazine, who I guess ought to know.

However, there's more to a chassis than just a floorpan (which is the only bit of the Maser that's used as far as I know), and the full carbon bodyshell will make an enormous difference to chassis rigidity.

The same journal goes on about the Ferrari-built (and designed?) engine, but I guess it all comes out of Big Daddy FIAT's parts bin in the end...

I suppose its been a long time since the T33/Montreal days (sigh)

Re: 8C does not use an old Maserati chassis!!!

I was talking to an Alfa designer yesterday who told me that there is no relationship with the old Coupe/Gransport.

I asked him because what the British magazines are saying wasn't the same as what I had already read in Italian magazines- that the 8C chassis was derived from the new Granturismo/Quattroporte. But he said that is not really true either.

The article in the AROC mag was from another source I think? Something like Car Design - more of a trade/industry mag than an off the shelf one. It certainly seemed very well informed anyway!

Lauren - have you seen this month's Classis Cars? It has a big Montreal feature.

Re: 8C does not use an old Maserati chassis!!!

I just talked with one of the designers that worked on the 8C (I work in Zagato so I know some Alfa designers).

He confirmed what the Italian magazines have said- that the 8C is based on a shortened Granturismo(the new Maserati) platform, and has nothing to do with the old Coupe/Gransport.

Aha - so your post is correct, the 8C does not use an OLD Maserati chassis!

It uses a new one

Actually its common practice these days - what about the Alfa 164? Didn't it share its floorpan with a Peugeot or something? Peugeot/Renault/Volvo was another multi-corporate tie-in, Jaguar/Ford Mundane-o etc.

Its a good way of saving cash. After all, what's wrong with a Maserati floorpan? Even an old one??

I didn't realise you worked at Zagato, Alesi. Nice one I'll have a TZ2

Lauren

Thanks Rick, I shall make a beeline to the newsagents!!!
