Heater problems HELP PLEASE !

I have an 04 GT JTD and for the life of me can't get the heater to function properly.
With the aircon switched on and the temp on 'HI' I can ger 'warm' air blowing to the bottom of the car. any other combination blows colder air and not at what would not be described as strong.
Q's: When on full should I expect a strong ar flow through the dash vents?
Does the aircon have to be on? this would be very fuel inefficient?

Advice help please, what should be checked? is this a common fault on the GT? why do I only get warm air through the bottom and certainly not what you would rate as hot.

Thanks....a cold new GT owner (apart from this I love the car, need to find a solution to my single CD player also, would like a newer Alfa headunit that plays MP3 and or has a changer input)

Re: Heater problems HELP PLEASE !

First things first..does the engine get up to temperature in..lets say six to ten miles in this weather. If not then you need to check the thermostat. Its also worth making sure the water pump is working.

Assuming all that side is working satisfactorily and generating the heat, then its probably the electronics in the heater control unit..which is a dealer or specialist visit..and possibly quite pricey unless it can be reset.

You say "New" GT. How long have you had it and where did you get it, as it could well be warranty work down to the seller. This fault does not just happen out of the blue.

Your heater should work fine without the a/c being on..though Alfa heaters have never been the greatest..and their thermostats are rubbish and deteriorate and fail in a couple of years quite commonly.

Whereabouts are you?

Re: Heater problems HELP PLEASE !

Just bought it, it's a 2004 not from a main dealer so am not sure if this is covered under the warranty.
The engine temperature get's up fine, I'm in West Yorkshire.
How do I check any of the pump and thermostat?

Thanks for the assist

Re: Heater problems HELP PLEASE !

Well..if you've just bought it from a dealership (you don't say exactly where you got it) then it doesn't matter a hoot if its a main dealer or not..its got a warranty that it works..and it doesn't.

My advice is to take it straight back to them, tell them the fault was there when you bought it. No matter what they say they ARE liable. If they argue..then put it in writing..This is evidence you may need later if it gets sticky (hopefully not) Ask any trading standards office or Citizens advice.

Assuming you get somewhere with them it needs checking out by someone who knows Alfas, not by anyone 'having a go' at fixing it, who will only make it worse, so you need either a main dealer diagnosis (they have a system called 'Examiner Smart' which can trace many sorts of fault) They charge about 70 just to do a test. Or a good independent (who may also have 'examiner'..mine in Lincoln does, but many do not) who charge less.(a lot less usually)

W. Yorks is a big place (I was born in Huddersfield..gawd bless me)..so tell us where you are and we can direct you to an Alfa mechanic you can hopefully trust. They are worth their weight in gold..Theres's a list on the site somewhere.

The GT is a great car, but you need it right from day one. Don't forget to check the oil every week if you are new to Alfas. The diesels tend not to use it, but don't be complacent.

A good independent will look the car over for you and give you an inevitable 'to do' list, but unlike main dealers who may possibly fleece you, a good independent will help you prioritise any work so you can spread the cost accordingly.

Hope this helps

Re: Heater problems HELP PLEASE !

Update...... I found the problem....the expansion tank was leaking hence dropping the water level in the cooling system. Just enough to keep the car cool during normal running, but not enough to send water through the heat exchanger for the heating.
Car fixed having fun again
