MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

New to the boards. Seriously thinking about getting a 159 2.4 JTDM Ti, but concerned about fuel consumption. 90% of my driving is motorways steady 70-80mph. Will I get over 50 miles to the gallon?

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

In a word......... No. Once the car has been sufficiently run in you should get 40mpg on a steady 70-80 mph run as you mention.

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

Not a chance from the 2.4 (or any of the Alfa engines, which, incidentally, several are shared with SAAB).

What you will get though is fun and a real sense of ownership pride

In addition, people won't think you're a dentist or a vet

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

Thanks guys. I thought as much. I do over 100 miles a day so this is important for me in the pocket. Now I have to decide whether my heart rules my head.

I can tell you the IMHO the current models are a joy to behold and drive. I was just staring at someones' grey Spider at lunch time on my way to the post office - much of the time I'm staring at my blue Brera!

PS I think you'd get better mileage from the 1.9JTDM, closer to 50 anyway.

Yes, good thinking. And the Ti will pack will be available with that engine soon too.

Rest assured it does - a Saab 9-3 and a 159 are very different propositions.

Just to set a challenge to anyone else out there I did manage 51.2mpg over the 76 miles from Croydon to Dover the other morning but god was the journey boring (65-75mph all the way and no use made of the power/torque) - I may as well have been driving a Saab. Same journey back later in the day I managed 33.2mpg

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

You'll definitely do better with the 1.9 engine and if you fit a P-Box you'll recapture some of the power and torque you'd lose from the 2.4. That coupled with the lighter weight would be a cracking choice IMO.

From all accounts the 2.4 has a serious image problem as far as consumption is concerned. The published figures no way near match what's being achieved in practice.

Causing me no end of headaches in deciding what car to replace my Gt with -even to the extent that holding on to it is becoming a serious option.

In my Gt with the 1.9 I average 38-40 driving to work every day (under two miles) and up in the mid 40's when hammering up to Glasgow at motorway speeds. Best I ever got was 52 mpg going to Newcastle airport which is mainly A Roads where the highest speed would be around 60 mph and in reality about 56 mph. So, for you in a 159 with the 1.9 stock engine I'd say mid 40's. With a p-box maybe touch more.

You will get in the mid to high 30's in a 2.4 with that sort of driving. Best I have managed is 41 mpg on a long A-road run.

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

My heart is definitely going to rule my head. I am but a few days away from ordering the 2.4. I drove one for a whole day yesterday and it was glorious. Then they told me that the price and spec has changed...

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

I decided that the electric seats and the visibility pack are unneccessary. I actually got a little annoyed with the auto wipers, I found them a little inconsistent. The auto lights also got stuck on, although this may have been down to road dirt.

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

Auto wipers ust take a bit to getting used to. I was up and down to Carlisle yesterday in filthy weather and they worked perfectly. the were even switchin themselves off in the dry spells

As for the lights - they are a bit over-sensitive, but stick them on lowest setting and they are fine.

Re: MPG on Alfa 159 Ti

Go for the 1.9...strangely enough, its quieter and smoother than the 2.4 but it does not give that aural pleasure. The 1.9 should give 45mpg. Big diesels to me are like big petrols.....they just drink and drink and drink.
Oh and the 1.9 is out now with the Ti pack I beleive (well orders are being taken anyway!).

They haven't got the 2008 model year cars on there yet.

From what the dealer told me on Monday, the new Ti models lose the electric seats, the folding mirrors, the visibility pack and the metallic paint. The new price for the 2.4 is 25,650, then you can add other bits back on. I would guess the 1.9 would have the same spec but be a couple of grand less.

The 2008 model 159 Ti will lose the Electric Memory Seat Pack although the Sports Seats Remain, Electric Folding Mirrors and the Paint finish will be chargeable as per the rest of the range.

Price will be 23250 for the 1.9JTDm and 25750 for the 2.4JTDm

These prices relect a 1000 premium over the Lusso model in each engine derivative.
