159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

I have a theory - that the high fuel consumption in these models is due to the PDF.

My car was in today to get a new Blue and Me unit fitted and I mentioned the high consumption to the garage. They could find nothing wrong with the engine management system or mapping but they "reprogrammed" the PDF, which they normally do at service anyway.

On the way back up the road the car felt like it was carrying more momentum for a lighter throttle pressure and was more "on cam". The fuel consumption on the way back was also a lot better than it had been on the way down (East Kilbride to Carlisle).

Interestingly, BMW only offer the PDF as an add-on (well, they would, wouldn't they). Not sure about Audis but the amount they smoke tends to make me think it isn't an option . This could explain the apparently better consumption in these cars.

I guess I'll need to make sure the car gets a good ragging a couple of times a week to keep the PDF clean.

Re: 159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

Its ehhh D P F.

And yeah the Gerries dont generally fit them, Audi sort of cant because their engines are too manky.

Any diesel WITHOUT a DPF, will have the exhaust turned down at the end (in shame), that and the smoke is a dead giveaway.

Some VAG cars if you look carefully have a bog straight chrome tip pointing straight out.... but they are blank - the the outlet is below!

Re: 159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

My 159 can get all tardy, lumpy and on a run high consumption.

A blast of slowing down and red lining it in third, fourth (maybe fifth) repeated twice sorts it out.

Examiner can force a regeneration on the DPF as well as the car's own system by raising the exhaust gas temperature, it doesnt use a liquid like PSA's stuff.

It uses a calculation to determine when it needs cleaned.

Re: 159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

Interesting stuff; at 43k my 1.9jtdm is getting marginally worse on fuel consumption, around 38mpg tops, and it has never been near the AR official figures.

At its 2 services the (different) garages have said 'seems OK when we take it out' (yes, on a traffic-less B-road!) but no matter how I drive it, it doesn't get any better. Guess I should've pushed the issue more with the dealer but hey-ho time is precious.

Still, it's the only thing spoiling my enjoyment of the car so interesting to hear these views.

Thats hopeless Timinho - have you tried giving a good blast and seeing if it improves?

If you only do stop start commuting (as I do some weeks) It does only do about 38mpg.

Wallop some Forte diesel treatment through an empty tank to see if that helps.

Re: 159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

DPF is killing fuel consumption on diesels, Mercedes Sprinters are a classic pre DPF they generally get around 31mpg with DPF your looking at 26mpg. This is really hurting my fleet customers, and on the smaller diesels that are used as town cars and never given a good thrash they are not cleaning themselves and the management lights are coming on. I would recommend using Millers Powersport 4 and giving it a good hard run

Re: 159/Brera JTDm Fuel Consumption

So if Alfa take the DPF off the production line or make the DPF an option, then the cars will be more efficient.... Has anyone pointed this out to Alfa or are they already on the case? Sounds like the dealers are wise to it...

DPF is there to achieve Euro whatever (4,5,6) emissions is it not

Therefore it could really be an option or removed !!

Does it ever chug out black smoke when it bogs down at low revs

Thanks CJ I'll give that a try.

I do quite a lot stop start (too much for sure ) but plenty of motorway and B-road mileage too; even a good clear run doesn't get any better than 40mpg!

Mine does get used for this type of driving and I am averaging about 37mpg and I have never seen this problem - However whenever my wife drives my 159 she does see this - its strange and probably down to the fact the my style of driving is now used to the Alfa, faster acceleration, shorter gear changes and higher revs, whereas she drives it like her 1.0 Yaris. the 159 scares her witless.

In short I think this reinforces what cj romeo says - it needs the sensor blasting occasionally by a good rev!

Also worth bearing in mind you cant remove the DPF and pop in a bit of pipe in the same way that you can with the old style cats...Unless you are a big fan of limp home mode
