Basic 156 V6 question

I'm wanting a 156 either 2.0 or 2.5, & somebody's told me the V6's are all 6-speed. Are there different types of 6-speed, or just the semi-automatic Selespeed?

Or the automatic with the 2.5 V6, not sure how many gears though, 4 or 5..

No Selespeed on a 2.5 V6, it came on a 2.0 Twinspark and later the 2.0 JTS. You could get Selespeed on a 3.2 GTA, not sure if it was 5 or 6 speed though.

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

No Selespeed, but can't you get the Q-system with a semi-automatic 4-speed box - which you can either use as a fully automatic or with a simulated H-pattern change? As a 3rd alternative to the 6-speed manual and the fully auto, that is?

News to me! - are you sure? I would have said a definate "no - all GTA's are 6 speed manual" if asked that!

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's confused! But my excuse is I don't own one yet....
I was interested in buying a car & had been told it was a 6-speed. I assumed manual, but I obviously shouldn't have "assumed".
The owner told me later that it did have a Q-box.
I then assumed this was a Selespeed, but going by preceding comments.....wrong again.

Is there a specification/history section on the Site perhaps I could check, or would it be too complicated to build it

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

The 156 2.5 V6 has either 6 speed manual or Qsystem Automatic (4 speed with H pattern optional control) - there were no other options.

156 3.2 V6 GTA has 6 speed manual or 6 speed Selespeed.

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

I can confirm that the 2.5 156 will be a 4 speed Q-System automatic. Basically an auto with option to shift up and down (forward and back on lever) yourself by moving the lever over. I would think that an early 156 2.5 will be 5 speed with 6 speed box coming later (Is that way in the 166 anyway!)

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

AFAIK there wasnt a 5 speed manual 156 2.5 V6 only the 6 speed - even when first introduced. 166 had a few different options which didnt end up in the 156. Selespeed GTA I'm sure was more expensive than the 6 speed manual and not a popular option in UK - I think 147 GTA Selespeed was more popular

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

Ok - Usual Alfa parts bin lucky dip then! Always confusing! Why would a 1999 166 2.5 be a 5 speed and a 1999 156 2.5 be a 6 speed - Surely the 166 is the one that you would make 6 speed first! Probably because the 166 was ready to go first but held back for the 156.

Anyway - Tried autotrader, no GTA seles for sale!

My best guess is that at the time (1999) the 2.5 was the most powerful engine for the 156, but its lack of midrange torque over the 2 litre necessitated it having a 6 speed close ratio box, to keep up with the competition and also to make it feel that bit quicker than the 2 litre.

In the 166 it wasn't the top engine as they had the 3.0 V6, so performance was less of an issue.

Just my 2 cents

Re: Basic 156 V6 question

We stand to be corrected on the GTA

but the 2.5 was definately only Manual here.
All TS where a choice of Manual or sell me speed.
