GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

Gang! What do we think of this one for sale:

Autotrader - ALFA ROMEO GTV 3.0 V6 24V Lusso 2dr Coupe

I spoke to the guy and he sounds nice and genuine and all that, apparently it has also had an MAF change quite recently plus comes with all the cambelt reciepts from a few thousand miles ago before he bought it.

It comes with all the dealer books and all the keys but only has some service history apparently, but to be honest the car looks near mint and has the reciepts for the belt work which is better than nothing.

And, as I say, it has the dealer books still plus keys meaning at least it hasn't been driven by a drongo,

Price wise he said he's ideally like at least £2800 for it, but could go lower if I had cash in hand. I'm thinking maybe £2650-2700???

What do you GTV lovers out there think? And what does every one else think? Does this look and sound like a decent car? I think it does, but I'm desperate for a new V6 Alfa as we all know,

It's a Silver Ph2 which is what I've wanted from the off, and the leather colour would grow on me,

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Darren

I thought the GTV V6 had a 6 speed box?

Hmm, to be honest Ros I knew more about the car than him,

I don't think it's a stitch up, just the fact he doesn't know!

So do they all have a 6 speed box then or were the early ones 5 speed?

Thats what I'm wondering mate, maybe they only came with a 6 speed later on, in like 2000 or something?

I'm fairly certain this is a Phase 2 though.

Well I'm not so sure. I think you need to do some more research before you buy.

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

I found this on www.sportsalfa.com;

Quote:
Series 1 - The first V6's came out in June 1996 and continued until around March 1998. Limited production.

Series 2 - In May 1998, the GTV V6 was cosmetically revised. It is easily identified externally by the colour coded side skirts, colour coded bumpers, chromed surround grille, and 5 hole 'teardrop' alloys. Inside, the centre console is aluminium grey, as well as the two main cowlings. And the kick-plates under both doors are black scored with the 'Alfa Romeo' name in aluminium grey.

- In May 1999, the 6-speed V6 was released. This car is identical to the series 2 V6 except for the extra gear and some changes to the exterior. Most 6 speeds were offered with larger 17" telephone dial alloys and a small wing on the rear.

- In September 2001, a special edition GTV Cup was launched to commemorate the GTV racing series in Italy. Only available in red, each one has a numbered plaque on the console, more supportive seats and wet look 17" telephone dial alloys. Very limited edition. Definitely the most collectable.
So it looks like this car is an early Phase 2. Personally I'd hold out for one with a 6 speed box.

So would I, I can't imagine long gears is much fun in a V6. The 2.5 V6 ratios are bang on for fun

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

Not the best colour combination - is that blue leather? and I'd want the 17" wheels as they look fantastic on the GTV.

My preference is silver and red leather or blue and tan leather. You are lucky in the UK with such choice of GTV's - I have been looking for a year for the right GTV V6 and have now just given up and bought another 156 V6 instead

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

The 6-speed box was an option from the start of phase 2, think it became standard later.

My September '98 P2 is a 6-speed.

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

For £2700 if you don't buy it I will.

If the belts have been changed just give it a full service when you buy it - at this age and price IF everything works then a FHS is not such a big deal.

Blue leather - SO WHAT - it is a V6.

5 Gears - we are talking £2700 for a phase 2 - dohhh.

As you can see I am biased.

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

It certainly looks like an early phase 2. The early aeropack GTVs were 6 speed as standard, then I think they all came with the 6th cog.

I wouldn't worry too much about missing service history if everything else seems ok. Definitely check everything over thoroughly.

Whatever you do, get an HPI report. You can get them on the RAC website for a fiver. If the HPI shows up discrepancies then I'd be inclined to walk away.

They could have clocked it a bit better than 96,000 miles!!!

It has some history, just not full, but to be honest I do like FULL History, but we are talking about a car that can clock a 0-60 of 6.5 with a top speed of 155MPH. (I think, ) And for less than £3000 for a car that can do all that aint too bad. Plus, it is an Alfa!

That one was a Phase 1 mate, and although the mileage was better I didn't like the black skirts. Picky I know, but the Phase 2 just looks so much better.

But thanks for all your help and advice guys, we shall see what happens.

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

Ah, another thing, he has said to me that the Airbag light is on along with the handbrake light coming on intermitantly, now from what I've read around these here parts these are both relatively normal things to happen. If I wanted to have the lights sorted and working fine what would be the score? What has to get done and how much is it gonna cost?

Also, do GTV's have electric or fixed aerials? This one looks black and fixed.

Also, check out the picture of the radiator, I did ask if it was leaking or needed replacing and he replied rather genuinely with 'It may be because I've washed it and water has got in'. If you could take a look at the picture guys and tell me what it looks like?

Cheers!

He says he wants to swap it for something, but why don't you give him a ring? I bet someone on here from Edinburgh would pop over and take a look for you, to check it out. As Scotland is sparsely populated, there's less buyers for cars, so it might go for less than what you'd pay for one down south..

If you like it and could buy it for a good price you'd be more than welcome to stop by at York or Middlesbrough on the way home for a kip if you didn't fancy doin the whole trek in one go. I just saw it and it screamed 'Darren' at me!

(partly cause it has a weird face.. )

The 6th cog is definitely the best box to go for

Air bag light easily fixed as is the hand brake light

Hand brake light is either worn pads or low brake fluid.

The P1 I had before the Cup it had an electric ariel so I would say they all have an electric one.

That Rad looks fooked Trust me I've just replaced mine a month ago it looked just like that ask him to knock £300 off that's what a replacement rad will cost from a good independant

Hope this helps HM

Cheers for your help HM, some stellar advice there mate, ta for that!

Hmm, the car is starting to be a tad disappointing, especially with the lights and the rad, and then the lack of FSH. Hmm, now where do I turn???

Re: GTV or not GTV, that is the question.

This might be the Stella talking but aint that the air con evaporator at the front that we can see thats wet.
This looks a good car to me with its belts and clutch done. A six speed in this condition will be too much more money. On this one the lack of a rear wing would bother me more than anything else on the car.
