GT Q2

Sold the Brera, bought a GT

I eventually got rid of the Brera V6 in a swap with a GT Q2

What a fantastic machine by comparison.

It's got better seats, better driving position, it's more alive to drive, not unlike my old twin spark 155.

The GT does nearly 40mpg & i'm sure it's quicker low down, it certainly feels it.

The GT is much more practical & just about looks as good.

Build quality is not quite there, but it's close.

The roadholding was the one thing the Brera could do well, but again, with the Q2 diff, this things nearly as sure footed.

What the swap has highlighted to me is how badly wrong Alfa have got it, the re-vamped cars can't come soon enough.

Good to hear

I did the opposite to you and went from diesel -> petrol, while I do enjoy the revs driving a diesel is so much easier, the power is so much more accessible and they feel faster than they are, where as I think my 3.2 feels slower than it is, if you get that

I hope they will install the 1.9 JTTD...bi-turbo diesel 190bhp 400NM....that will be a killer Alfa...

But I am almost sure they won't do that...no comment.

They should do a version of that in the GT before they end its production. They've got a 180bhp single turbo 1.9 JTD in the 147 now, I wonder if its much different or just a map? It'd be nice to get that from new in the GT.

Alfa didnt get teh cars wrong at all, they got the customers wrong.

Aiming at Mercedes and Audi customers, they produced cars that didnt perform, because they were all about image. Which alienated a lot of existing Alfa customers and those used to BMW.

sounds like you prefer a car with a bit more 'raw' in the roar, and less refinement. can't disagree with your there!

glad you are happier now.

^^^ i think this is a good point. i don't think alfa did a bad thing by increasing refinement to appeal to a wider audience. i hope this is just the first step in the change, and now they can refocus on adding a bit more rawness to future vehicles or incarnations.

basically, we want the best of both worlds: sophistication and build quality, plus great handling and driving. at the prices alfa's are designed to, it's a hard balance to get right.

have fun cirvy!

They got the cars wrong.

The 159/Brera just fails to compete with the BMW/AUDI/MERC opposition. They look great, & at last they are reasonably well put together, but they're too heavy & don't drive well enough! Those issues become relevant to any customer.

Following the re-launch, if Alfa get it right, they should start to sell a few & we will, hopefully, start to see more cars on the road.

My 2 local Alfa dealers have only sold 2 Brera V6 cars since launch, what does that tell you about the flagship model. To say that Alfa got the customers wrong is a bit like BR blaming train delays on "the wrong type of leaf on the line".

Re: Sold the Brera, bought a GT

Is it perhaps not the case that Alfa had very much America in it's mind for the Brera where all they require is something pretty but solid in quality to display in their driveways?

Dynamics featuring fairly low in a list of American automotive priorities.

In any event Alfa do now recognise the 159/Brera's shortcomings and appear to be working flat out to lighten the chassis and give us back some real Alfa engines.

Cirvy. You're way off matey. The 159 is better than a 3 series. We had the 320D M Sport for 5 weeks and the 159 Ti spanks it in every aspect except interior storage & ease of use of the ICE and phone system.

Problem is, the market does not see it that way, neither does the motoring press, these cars are not well percieved generally, & that is where Alfa have got it so wrong.

I've driven a 2.4 159 & it was great, i can imagine a ti is sensational. But, i had my Brera for 18 months & it was awful. My mates 159 1.9 is ok, but it won't leave anyone reeling in delight

The cars they're making just are'nt good enough, & i'm a huge Alfa fan, i've had 6 of the things & will probably always drive an Alfa of some description, i love 'em.

But i can see when they've got it wrong.

I think you are absolutely right, no matter how you look at it, Alfisti still get a lot for their money. I love the refinement, build quality and looks on the newer models, you just don't get it from the competition at those prices. (we've been researching new cars for my dad and my fiance recently).

Also, I don't think the new models are slow when they are run in. I think it is actually the improved build quality which means the engine is a bit tight and sluggish at the beginning. Still, room for improvement and let them at it.

Cars will always have room for improvement, technology is not going to stand still!

Re: Sold the Brera, bought a GT

I agree that AR seem to have got it wrong with the Brera in terms of how it compares with the competition, but the 159 is VERY competitive, including in terms of build quality, handling, power, weight and power:weight ratios.
