belt-in- heck

just had some bad news, cam belt on my 156 has stripped some teeth, luckily engine not damaged, but what do you get with the cam belt kit,is she likely to need a new variator... thanks.

In answer to the variator part of the question, if the car has a diesel like sound which last a few seconds when started, yes you will need a new variator. I would recommend you change it anyway, sods law is youll get the cambelt kit and 1 month later the variator will be rattling!

Glad theres no engine damage!

Re: belt-in- heck

Wish I had been that lucky

My tensioner failed, stripped 6 teeth off the cambelt and had most of the valves for lunch. Cost me £1300!

Get them to check the cam pulleys too. My exhaust one had broken and was very very loose too.

Help Re: belt-in- heck

Sorry to Hi-Jack your thread...but the above post has me quaking!!! (1300!!!) Yesterday my 156 started 'whining' and has progressively got louder.Everything working and driving ok (though did seem slightly down on power...but could be imagining it... ..) would it be the tensioner? Its not clicking, just like a 'whirring' sound, pitch increasing with revs.Variator etc was done recently (7mths) and apparently got new tensioner/s etc etc.

Re: belt-in- heck

ALWAYS replace the variator when having the cambelt done - about £100 more.

I made the classic mistake with the GTV - belt replaced and a month later the variator went. No problem but I had to wait another 35 k miles before I replaced it.

Paul.

Re: belt-in- heck

Do the water pump too, all belts pulleys and tensioners. Cost me just over £400 for the lot.
